[Tsuyuri Kanao cosplay] Chengdu World Line Anime Exhibition, When the Silent Butterfly Stands Quietly

The Chengdu World Line Anime Exhibition has successfully come to an end, and here is a set of convention photos of my Tsuyuri Kanao cosplay. Without unnecessary prefaces, let's dive straight into these photos and my understanding of Kanao's character.

Actually, in the original Demon Slayer work, Kanao is a girl who possesses very delicate emotional expression and sharp observational skills, yet never speaks proactively. She is used to standing quietly behind others, blinking her bright purplish-red eyes to observe the world and the people around her. Therefore, when shooting this set of photos, I intentionally avoided grand and flamboyant martial arts movements. Most of the time, I stood still, drew the blade, tilted my head slightly, or simply held the sword vertically in front of me. I feel that capturing this quiet and introverted state, to grasp that slightly "empty" trait of hers, is the hardest part to restore, and it is what I have been striving to approach.

Speaking of the details of this outfit, I prepared many small props this time. The butterfly hair accessory on the head is the soul of this look—with a pink base and green trim, it completely restores the color scheme of the original setting. The white outer haori is actually not just simple pure white fabric; looking closely under natural light, it features subtle jacquard patterns. The red Chinese knot cord at the neckline serves as a great color-pop between the white and black uniforms, keeping the frame from looking too plain. The inner black uniform is a stand-collar, double-breasted style, paired with a wide white belt and a silver belt buckle, looking sharp while fitting the original uniform design perfectly. What satisfies me the most is this Nichirin sword, with its pink-and-white handle wrapped in a diamond pattern, and the pink under-patterns and three-star details on the scabbard are beautifully executed. To enrich the photoshoot props, I additionally matched a blue butterfly on the scabbard. Under natural light, the blue butterfly forms a cool-toned echo with the black blade and white haori.

The location for this shoot was outdoors at the Chengdu World Line Anime Exhibition. To be honest, the crowd density at convention scenes is huge, so if you want to take clean convention photos, it highly tests the photographer's snapshot abilities and talent for avoiding crowds. We specifically chose a time in the afternoon when the sunlight was relatively soft, utilizing the on-site glass curtain wall as a background, along with the diffuse reflection of the spotlights on the pavement after sunset, making the entire photo look very warm and gentle without harsh hard shadows. During the shoot, I also brought two swords, mainly for the convenience of composition from different angles. The sets of drawing the blade and looking back in the pictures are all snapshots I really liked that day. The softness of the clothing fabric under the light and the reflection of the blade both brought out an excellent atmosphere.

During post-processing, because there were relatively cluttered crowds and backgrounds outside the venue, I mainly applied a background blur effect to focus the gaze on the character's face and costume details. I preserved a certain sense of skin texture instead of pursuing a heavily airbrushed state that lacks realism; after all, convention photos should still retain a bit of the live breathing room and layers of light and shadow.

Looking through this set of photos, I am also very satisfied with the texture this time. Finally, I have to say that Chengdu World Line is truly great to wander around, the on-site atmosphere is amazing, and everyone is exceptionally enthusiastic.

Since I am cosplaying Kanao, I will definitely fulfill her character essence. I will continue to cosplay related characters from Demon Slayer for the next event, with many interesting looks in planning.
