[Li Meiling Cosplay] Cardcaptor Sakura: Chengdu Anime Convention Photoshoot Record

These are the convention photos we took at the Chengdu anime convention. This Li Meiling cosplay outfit—featuring a black school sailor uniform paired with a white pleated skirt—is a classic, highly recognizable school style. Before the shoot, I styled the wig into her signature double buns and used light blue hair ribbons on both sides, ensuring the hair accessories matched the colors of the uniform to create a clean, cohesive visual focus.

The sunlight was fantastic on the day of the shoot. To capture her agile and spirited personality, we focused on catching dynamic 'hair flip' moments during our snaps. Capturing the black twin-tails and bangs as they were caught in the wind or flipped in motion successfully broke up the stiffness of traditional standing poses, giving the photos a real sense of life. The modern glass-wall architecture outside the convention hall served as our backdrop; blurred nicely with a wide aperture, it stayed beautifully clean and didn't distract from the main subject.

In post-processing, we focused primarily on skin translucency and faithful color reproduction. The contrast between the black jacket and the white sailor collar is exceptionally sharp on camera, while the red trim on the collar and cuffs serves as a perfect highlight that elevates the overall quality of the uniform. Under the bright outdoor sun, every fold of the white pleated skirt cast a distinct shadow, creating a richly textured light and shadow structure. This high-contrast light and shadow play is a unique perk of outdoor convention photoshoots. It's exactly why I love natural light at conventions; there's no need for complex studio lighting setups—as long as you catch the most comfortable angle of light, you can perfectly preserve facial details and costume textures.

For the composition, I experimented with a few different standing poses: looking back over my shoulder, crossing my arms, and placing my hands on my hips. To keep the visual weight balanced, I purposefully left some room below the shins and knees in the frame, which not only showed off the natural drape of the skirt but also kept the lens language from feeling too cramped. Unlike heavy armor or elaborate battle suits, this casual sailor uniform is incredibly comfortable, allowing me to move around and walk freely. This made it super easy to flexibly capture these fun, dynamic moments in various environments around the convention.

From practical experience, capturing these smooth hair-flip movements heavily tests the softness of the wig. If the synthetic hair is too stiff, fast-shutter snapshots can easily result in weird, frizzy tangles. Taking the time to thoroughly brush and secure the wig beforehand is the foundation of a successful shoot. The photographer was also incredibly patient, continuously snapping to catch the perfect curve of the hair and my most natural expression. I've always believed that the true charm of convention photos lies in the authentic integration with the venue and that live, on-scene feeling. There's no need to rely on heavy CGI effects; simply preserving the character's natural vibe and the costume's actual texture is enough to make the photos look highly convincing.
