We managed to complete this Seaside location shoot on the rocky coastal reefs just before the rainy season. Choosing an overcast day for the shoot fit the bleak, crisp aesthetic I was aiming for, as the greyish-blue sea and sky made the overall atmosphere even more serene and desolate. For styling and makeup, the blue wig paired with a custom white shirt and dark blue pinafore dress, accented by the signature red ribbon tie. To faithfully recreate the 2D character design, white bandages were wrapped around the wrists and knees, complemented by black stockings and white sneakers. Standing amid the sea breeze and crashing waves, my clothes were soaked quite a bit and my legs grew numb from the cold; nevertheless, to maintain crisp silhouette lines and composition, I endured standing on one leg for prolonged poses.
The biggest challenge in this set was the interactive dual-figure composition. Two identical figures appear in the frame—one in front and one behind, one leaning forward with an outstretched hand while the other stands in silence—designed to match the themed quote and capture the mood of two selves pulling at each other. Shooting identical outfits and synchronized actions was quite difficult, as line-of-sight positioning required extreme precision, demanding patient angle adjustments to ensure the emotional connection between the two resonated. In post-processing, special care was taken to maintain consistency across the sea background while preserving the coarse texture of the reefs, letting the cool-toned aesthetic permeate throughout to faithfully evoke the solitary essence of the original work.
The shooting site was actually quite challenging: the wind was howling, the rocks were slippery, and the poses had to be both expressive and stable. But judging by the final results, that cool, distant, and aloof mood hit the mark perfectly. As a dedicated Rei Ayanami cosplay record, bringing the storyboard in my mind to life felt like a dream come true. That wraps up this shoot's log.
