[Huohuo cosplay] Catching Ghosts with Talismans at Firefly ACG Expo

This edition of the Firefly ACG Expo has finally wrapped up successfully. Gearing up in this Huohuo cosplay gave me a huge surge of energy. Even though the venue was bustling with crowds, experiencing such a passionate atmosphere in full gear was a truly unforgettable memory.

Regarding this shoot, first off, big thanks to Gugu for model duties—we did a lot of advance prep. Huohuo's costume is packed with fine details: from the small blue hat to the white paper-man hair accessory clipped to her hair, down to every traditional Chinese motif printed on the fabric, we aimed to recreate every piece faithfully. The most painstaking piece was likely the golden hollow spherical bell at her waist; to make it gleam with an antique texture under outdoor sunlight, we tested lighting setups and camera angles for quite a while.

Among the three photos, I particularly love the second shot with the one-legged lifted pose while holding the polearm prop with both hands. Right at that moment, a beam of sunlight hit from the side, illuminating the mint-green layered tones of the wig while outlining the costume color palette and body contour naturally. The garment design strongly emphasizes lightness—whether it's the wide bell sleeves or the short-like lower hem, both allowed for fluid dynamic movement.

In truth, while Huohuo usually appears timid and easily frightened, she is deeply reliable when danger strikes. While posing for these photos, I kept reflecting on her inner narrative: \"even when terrified, she raises her weapon bravely to catch specters.\" Gugu was wonderfully patient in guiding poses, fine-tuning my hand exertion points and center of gravity to capture a dynamic yet endearing effect.

The Firefly ACG Expo venues are always lively. Although the background of the third photo is softened, you can still spot many convention attendees passing by. Every time I do Cosplay photography outdoors, meeting fellow enthusiasts or seeing visitors pause to watch our workflow brings me immense joy. Because this costume features crisp, airy colors, outdoor natural light captures an ethereal yet grounded quality better than studio lighting.

Regarding props, the green-shafted long ritual tool was another vital element. Accented with golden fittings, it carries a solid tactile presence. While wielding and swinging it, paying careful attention to prop weight distribution was essential to prevent awkward poses. Fortunately, after a few attempts, movements became increasingly fluid.

The entire shoot was physically demanding since standing outdoors to refine poses took considerable energy, but reviewing the camera monitor to see satisfying shots emerge made all the effort worthwhile. For facial makeup, I specifically emphasized eye details, applying reddish-brown eyeshadow to highlight the lower lash line alongside a delicate red beauty mark dot, preserving animated, bright eyes across both lit and shadowed environments.

Styling the wig posed a particular challenge for this character, as straight mint-green hair can easily look flat. I performed layered trimming in advance to add crown volume, especially carving out her signature ahoge that sways naturally while walking to add a touch of charming clumsiness. Light hair shades are notoriously tricky in photography requiring ample sunlight to prevent washing out into flat white—thankfully, the daylight that day was ideal.

This isn't my first time cosplaying characters from Honkai: Star Rail, but Huohuo's adorable contrast between timidness and newfound courage deeply captivates me. Standing in the convention hall wearing this outfit felt like genuinely stepping into the shoes of that little judge running around with talismans. Every cosplay project is a tribute to the character and a personal challenge to self-expression. I hope these Convention photos record Huohuo's distinct charm and that everyone feels my genuine love for her. The day flew by quickly, but the memories will endure.
