Even though I just wanted to join the fun, I prepared my outfit, makeup, and hair in advance. Because the pipa itself is very bright, its gold trim and emerald embellishments were easily washed out under the complex ambient lighting of the Anime convention, making it quite challenging to set up the reflector and find the right angle.
Taking event Portrait photography of myself is hard physical work, and holding the pipa while keeping a pose was exhausting. Kneeling on a white blanket to shape the leg lines also made my knees ache a bit. My main goal this time was to highlight the visual impact of the styling, so during post-processing, I deliberately maintained high saturation for the pink and purple tones without applying heavy filters to avoid losing the original luster of the fabric. The blanket in the foreground added texture, while background blur softened the messy booths. The overhead lighting in the hall was somewhat harsh, so I adjusted the camera settings to balance the exposure. The whole process went relatively smoothly, and this outfit turned out to be quite eye-catching at the Anime convention thanks to the blonde hair and sequins catching the light nicely. Occasionally, passersby were curious about what character I was doing cosplay for, and since it was an original concept, I just gave a brief introduction.
During the shoot, I constantly had to adjust the white balance because of the varying light sources across the venue. The center of gravity of the pipa prop was slightly unbalanced, so holding it while keeping a smile tested my arm strength, and I had to set it down once in a while to rest. Since I was both the model and the photographer, I mounted the camera on a tripod with a self-timer, running back and forth repeatedly to check the composition—at one point, I felt like a robot pacing back and forth. The floor was slippery; kneeling on the blanket in high heels was stable enough, but standing up required careful balance. I tried to angle my body slightly in front of the lens to make the arm lines look sleeker. The skirt had many ruffles, which looked great when the air moved, but it tended to curl up while walking around the hall.
For this shoot, I picked a cleaner background and used a telephoto lens to compress the depth of field, turning the lights behind me into lovely bokeh. A low-angle shot made the legs look longer, and paired with the vivid Pink color scheme, the photos took on a lively and bright tone. The most important thing when shooting event Portrait photography is patience, especially when seeking good lighting and waiting for passersby to clear the frame; sometimes I had to stand for a long time just waiting for an open window. Although the outfit featured bold colors, it stood out brilliantly against the dimmer venue lighting. Reviewing the shots on screen after finishing, I saw that the desired look was basically achieved. The pipa details were gorgeous, but holding it for so long was quite heavy; nevertheless, wanting to present the best state, I maintained my sitting posture on-site to keep the pose neat. Overall, the shoot was both tiring and fulfilling—a solid test of my on-site Portrait photography skills that yielded very satisfying Anime convention photo returns.
