[Arknights Texas Cosplay] Dim Light Crimson and Black, the Wolf Soul of Ambience Synesthesia

In the past few days after the Guangzhou Firefly ACG Expo concluded, I went through and sorted out the raw camera files by shutter count, choosing a few images whose light and shadow closely match this theme to post, serving as a phased summary of the preparations during this period.

The main color scheme of the clothing for this shoot is black, using highly reflective patent leather and glossy PU materials. This kind of fabric is extremely prone to creating obvious highlights under strong studio light sources; if the reflection isn't handled well, the character's legs or arms in the frame can turn dead white, losing their proper three-dimensional sense and contour edges. I communicated the light positions and lighting ratios with the photographer in advance. The photography light stand with purple joints on the left side, combined with a large softbox as the main light source, illuminated the upper body horizontally. The stiff jacket collar showed distinct contours under the light, and the gaps bound by the crisscross straps at the waist used the diffuse reflection from the ground to outline the undulating edges of the torso. Compared to a purely frontal flat light, this directional side-backlight illuminating local areas better highlights the texture and heavy feel of the black patent leather jacket.

The tail of the red-and-black gradient long hair is exceptionally prominent in the dim light. During post-processing, I focused on extracting the red hue, because the color temperature in a studio environment is easily interfered with by surrounding ambient light and softbox reflections; if the red isn't pure enough, it will look dirty or dull. I carefully adjusted the saturation and lightness to make the hair ends look like a cluster of flames blending into the shadows.

The beast ears hair accessory on top of my head is a detail I care about very much. Although the plush texture forms a massive contrast with the hard patent leather outfit, it is a necessary softness for this character. For the shooting posture, I deliberately chose a semi-reclining sitting posture tilted to one side, shifting the center of gravity to one side with one hand supporting the ground and the other hand naturally resting on the knee. The advantage of this treatment is that the connection lines of the waist, abdomen, and hips extend along with the posture, while using the long scabbard prop placed next to me fills the visual blank on the left side of the frame, guiding the line of sight along the body contours down to the details of the thick-soled boots.

I did not deliberately erase or blur out the black light stands, reflector umbrellas, and softboxes that entered the frame in the background during retouching. For one thing, it increases the sense of presence; for another, this industrial and mechanical photographic equipment itself slightly aligns with the theme and style of this Cosplay. The glossy pants paired with thick-soled boots with metal buckles step on the gray concrete floor, with shadows drawn just right. The entire outfit truly tests body proportions, because the top is a short cut and the bottom consists of high-waisted glossy pants, with the waistline divided by the straps, visually lowering the waistline. When elongating the lower limb proportions in post-production, I very carefully maintained the perspective relationship to avoid excessive distortion, ensuring that the manga feel wouldn't destroy the realistic and natural structural framework of the image.

Being both the model and the retoucher, I was actually worried before shooting whether I could capture the charm of this character, to the point that I even wrote "apologies for being OOC" when posting. However, when the light truly hit my body and I struck a pose conforming to this Ambience Synesthesia special setting, I felt I could still transmit some temperament unique to Texas through the costume and props. It possesses both that coldness of being detached from the team and a bit of more aggressive charm added by this specific styling. Every experience of Cosplay is an attempt to find that sweet spot between myself and the character through dressing up, makeup, and the photographer's lens. Among the outputs from this Guangzhou Firefly ACG Expo, I am most satisfied with the dark texture shaped by the lighting in these few photos, which both retains the highly reflective material characteristics of the clothing itself and allows the classic pairing of red and black to stand firmly in the frame. Whether it's daily training or convention photos, freezing the most beautiful side of a character in a specific context is the exact meaning behind my cosplays.
