Coming to the Changchun stop of the Honor of Kings National Competition this time, the Starlight Track Esports stage was even more thrilling than I had envisioned. As a cosplayer who frequently brings diverse game characters to life, this marked my first time undertaking large-scale, on-location shooting at a major esports tournament, and the entire experience was refreshingly novel. Changchun's weather cooperated beautifully; the outdoor grounds were bathed in generous sunshine, with open lawns and clear skies forming a pristine organic backdrop that showcased the multiple distinct outfits I brought to their fullest. In preparation for this event, I spent weeks fine-tuning garments and props. Outdoor natural lighting is worlds apart from convention hall strobes—ambient daylight magnifies fabric weaves and construction flaws—so I reinforced and recalibrated every detail across each ensemble.
While shooting on-site, crowds of spectators and passionate gamers gathered all around. Although primary attention was naturally riveted on the intense clashes unfolding on stage, our presence as cosplayers along the venue's perimeter still drew enthusiastic crowds stopping to take photos. The palpable synergy between high-stakes competitive esports and character cosplay felt truly magical. The looks I brought spanned a vast stylistic spectrum—ranging from graceful, flowing Chinese style styling gowns to combat-ready form-fitting bodysuits and armor finished with metallic plating. Maneuvering outdoors in heavy, structured garments was definitely an endurance test; standing under direct sun meant constant touch-ups for hair and makeup. Yet the moment the lens locked on and the tournament music swelled, that shared surge of gamer adrenaline took over instantly.
The photographer was exceptional at catching kinetic bursts, allowing us to explore diverse perspectives. Some frames were snapped spontaneously alongside the lawns and event canopies, where holding my silk round fan and weapons caught astonishingly clean natural highlights. Other frames mirrored in-game skill-casting stances; despite passing attendees and the bustling event environment, thoughtful framing preserved that dimension-shattering dramatic tension. One candid capture—turning in profile while raising my arm—is my personal favorite: my silvery-white locks and crimson attire held magnificent separation under the sunlight, with gilded arm gauntlets catching the light brilliantly, validating all the late-night crafting hours.
Participating in the Honor of Kings National Competition Starlight Track granted me a much deeper appreciation for esports culture. I used to view tournaments merely as players executing plays on stage, but participating as a cosplayer revealed that the electrifying pulse of the arena is forged collectively by competitors, fans, tournament crew, and performers like us. Freezing these moments with the camera documents my personal Role-playing game creations while injecting vibrant two-dimensional spirit into the tournament. Though exhausted with sweat soaking the wig cap by wrap-up, seeing the frames in the camera monitor made every ounce of effort worthwhile. I look forward to more cross-boundary stages where we can celebrate the singular allure of esports through our beloved characters.
