Putting on this gear and completely immersing myself in the aura of Celestia's character actually requires more peace of mind than imagined. Since I chose to portray the Ultimate Gambler from Danganronpa 1, I had to capture the calculation and pride hidden beneath her gorgeous facade. The complete outfit recreates the classic black and white gothic maid dress from the original setting, with large areas of ruffled lace, a striking red bowtie at the chest, and her iconic multi-layered black bonnet—every item combined acts as a visual vintage manifesto. For props, I prepared a kerosene lamp, candlesticks, and exquisite skull decorations that perfectly match the shoot's atmosphere. As my hands flipped through that heavy, vintage book, it felt as though I could truly find a special wagering chip between the lines.
To maximize the recreation of that interwoven red-and-black oppression and mysterious atmosphere from the game, a lot of thought went into the set design. A dark red velvet curtain was heavily used for the background to create an introverted sense of luxury. Paired with a dark wooden sideboard featuring intricate edge carvings and stacked books, classic gothic elements slowly emerged. The dark crucifix on the left, along with scattered roses and vines, added more layers of a dark fairy tale to the frame. For this lighting setup, I intentionally chose a rim light and a warm-toned contour light rather than an absolutely bright floodlight. When the light hits the headscarf and the white lace edges, it outlines more three-dimensional character contours. Sitting in that vintage single-seater leather armchair that carries its own sense of age, my entire aura seemed to be naturally elevated.
In terms of makeup and styling, to fit the character's original image, a pink-toned matte foundation was selected, paired with deep eye makeup and slightly upturned lines at the outer corners of the eyes to highlight her trait of looking elegant on the outside but harboring a touch of playfulness within. During the shoot, the photographer captured many of my favorite moments, such as playing with the little skull or resting my chin on one hand while looking at the lens. However, in this shoot, my absolute favorite is the composition where I sit in the chair with a slight nod and hands clasped, perfectly matching the composure and pride in her classic line, "Good day, everyone. May we meet again in the next life." Of course, there were small hitches during the shoot, such as that tall bonnet requiring extreme support strength to maintain balance, but for the pursuit of final visual perfection, all the trouble was completely worth it.
Most of the time, the act of roleplay isn't just copying an exterior look, but experiencing a different life. In this carefully built black and red world, briefly forgetting reality to feel the mysterious craftiness and elegance belonging to Celestia makes for a highly enjoyable creative process. This set of photos avoids excessive filter modifications in post-processing as much as possible, hoping to present this vintage film-like effect through solid light, shadow, and raw photo textures. Honestly, putting your heart into preparing every set design and treating every captured expression with care is what makes Dark style cosplay fill up with the joy of constant exploration.
