Slowing down occasionally to indulge in memories is by no means a bad thing. From the moment this Chiori ensemble arrived to the final makeup test, I made countless adjustments along the way. Character designs in Genshin Impact are renowned for intricate layering: the slate-blue halter-neck inner piece demanded numerous anchor points along the back to maintain its structured silhouette, while the yellow haori-style coat patterned with gold jacquard, though lightweight, displayed rich, tactile luster under ambient sunlight and reflections off the glass curtain wall. Crafting the headdress was particularly time-intensive—the vibrant orange blossom ornaments and gold-rimmed black accents had to be pinned individually layer by layer into the hair fibers, while the crimson fin-shaped hair ornaments required careful angling to ensure flawless geometry from both frontal and side profiles.
For the makeup, to harmonize with her signature palette, I used reddish-brown eyeshadow to sculpt depth across the eye sockets and outer corners, paired with crimson contact lenses to give her gaze razor-sharp focus. A coral-orange lip tint subtly mirrored the hair accessories. The custom katana served as the focal prop of this shoot: the metallic gold bands across the sheath and the red blossom emblem decorating the hilt were exquisitely realized, reflecting the prop maker's exceptional craftsmanship. Its reassuring, substantial heft naturally grounded my posture during dynamic takes.
We picked an urban location adjacent to expansive glass curtain walls. Juxtaposing modern architecture with traditional Japanese-inspired silhouettes created a striking, fourth-wall-breaking tension. Natural ambient lighting favored us immensely—an overcast sky provided soft, diffused illumination free of harsh shadows, perfectly highlighting delicate facial makeup and intricate fabric embroidery. Posing with the blade, I experimented with diverse movements, from pointing forward single-handedly toward the camera to resting the katana over my shoulder with a sharp glance backward. To freeze that elusive expression, the photographer continually guided the physical tension until I struck that balance of effortless, poised self-possession before releasing the shutter.
This session utilized 7Artisans Dimension Light & Shadow Studio lenses, which struck an impeccable balance between creamy background bokeh and edge-to-edge subject sharpness. Reflections on the glass and background greenery melted into a buttery blur, making the character pop while preserving fine details down to individual flyaway hair strands. Shooting outdoors with occasional pedestrians passing by demands practiced mental focus. I ran through Chiori's personality in my head, visualizing how she would carry herself in such a space, gradually steadying my breath until tension gave way to total immersion. Cosplay is undeniably a test of physical endurance, from fittings and wig styling to location shoots. Yet stepping out of daily routines to pour energy into a beloved character and craft is deeply fulfilling. Wishing a very happy Chiori's birthday, and looking forward to bringing more nuanced characters to life in the future.
