This Terraced fields cosplay photoshoot was primarily planned to present Shu within a sprawling agricultural landscape for Arknights. The very first time I laid eyes on these terraced fields, I felt they harmonized flawlessly with the character's temperament. To honor her divine lore as a deity of agriculture, the Traditional Chinese style cosplay costume was crafted with substantial weight and volume. It consists of multiple layered inner garments draped under an outer robe and cape, accented by various metallic accessories. Once fully adorned and standing on the wooden boardwalk, the entire silhouette felt grounded and majestic. Wig styling also demanded considerable time: intricate braiding combined with elaborate headdress elements centered on white, blue, and gold, standing out vividly against the lush green terraced backdrop for this Shu cosplay.
We arrived on location at 5:30 AM. The early morning slanted sunlight was ideal, and the elongated shadows cast along the boardwalk were captured during those golden moments. Many camera angles favored elevated downward perspectives; to achieve that commanding, lofty aura, I had to perch right at the edge of the guardrail. In the dawn hours before the sun fully crested the horizon, the mountain wind blew fiercely, constantly whipping my sleeves, hem, and cape into disarray, prompting my assistant to repeatedly smooth down my skirts and headpiece beside me.
Because the attire was so heavy, navigating the mountainous wooden boardwalk was genuinely strenuous. To maintain an upright, dignified posture before the lens, I engaged my core the entire time, keeping my shoulders firmly poised. Holding props in hand, I also had to continuously calibrate angles relative to the camera direction. Once the sun rose fully, the glare became intensely piercing; steadying my facial expression without blinking demanded real willpower.
Overlooking the expansive terraced fields, the morning glow bathed tier upon tier of green crops, revealing vivid, crisp textures—vividly evoking that poetic sentiment where the earth turns into a lime, brimming with moisture and life. While the original plan was simply to showcase a goddess descending upon the land, during the shoot I continually pondered how to convey that profound weight of being rooted in the soil. Movements had to avoid exaggeration; my gaze needed to stay calm, devoid of superfluous emotional flutter. When the breeze blew, billowing my hem backward alongside the vanishing perspective lines of the wooden rails, the frame opened up with grand spatial depth.
Reviewing unedited previews during breaks, the interplay of light, shadow, and fabric textures was remarkably striking. This session refrained from extravagant poses, focusing instead on composed stances, garment intricacies, and seamless harmony with the natural environment. Although my legs ached from hours of standing and core bracing by the time we packed up and hiked down the mountain, capturing images with such satisfying composition and cinematic lighting made every bit of effort deeply rewarding for this Arknights Shu cosplay.
