Taking advantage of a brief lull at the IJOY Anime & Game Festival, I found this massive floor-to-ceiling French window in a quiet corner of the venue and quickly shot a series of Dorothy Convention photos under fantastic natural light. The costume this time was Dorothy's white dress look from Goddess of Victory: New Hope. Designed with an off-the-shoulder neckline, the bust and sleeves generously feature translucent chiffon and tiered layers of delicate lace; multiple tiers of petticoats were layered underneath to hold the voluminous, fluffy flare of the skirt. The wig took a long time to choose, finally settling on this vibrant pink straight hair with a subtle gradient, styled with neat straight bangs and refined sidelocks to faithfully capture that intricate yet cool, aloof grace. For makeup, to complement the blue contact lenses, reddish-pink blending was applied to the eyeshadow to boost contrast and give the gaze a sharp, focused presence.
Shooting was actually quite nerve-wracking because foot traffic at the convention was heavy, often requiring us to wait for passersby to clear before snapping the shutter. However, the expansive gray stone-brick walls and dark-framed glass doors formed a natural clean backdrop, separating the subject from the surrounding chaos. Natural sunlight streamed in through the glass; side-backlighting rendered the sheer sleeves beautifully translucent, revealing the intricate lace patterns upon closer look. My absolute favorite shots are those utilizing the reflections on the glass doors—the natural glass reflection combined with outdoor silhouettes of trees and passing cars created a surreal sensation of breaking through the dimensional barrier. For posing, I deliberately tried opening both arms while slightly tiptoeing, as well as leaning against the window frame for a look-back gesture over my shoulder. Because the skirt is fairly short and prone to accidental slips during walking or turning, wearing safety shorts was essential. I constantly monitored the sweep angle of the skirt to freeze dynamic, fluttery moments mid-shutter, achieving an effortlessly airy lightness.
For the lower half, I paired over-the-knee White stockings with clear garter straps, stepping into white lace-up chunky-heeled ankle boots, which not only elongated overall body proportions but also introduced a ballerina-like elegance. With time pressing, we didn't have room for complex lighting rigs, relying entirely on ambient natural light and a single reflector. Fortunately, the ambient light was superb, rendering not only delicate skin texture but even the subtlest fabric creases and luster on the dress. Wearing this outfit tests posture heavily; because the sleeves are billowy, failing to open up the shoulders and keep the spine straight quickly makes the styling appear sluggish. Before the lens, I kept my posture elongated and poised, engaging lines from the neck and shoulders down to the fingertips to communicate Dorothy's unique aura and elegance through these convention photos.
The most mesmerizing aspect of Convention photos is precisely their irreproducible spontaneity. The convention floor is often noisy, yet in this tiny sunlit corner by the French windows, only shutter clicks and light were in motion. To catch satisfying frames, I repeatedly adjusted my stance and sightline. Pure white skirts blow out easily under bright light, requiring constant angle recalibration to find the sweet spot in light ratios. When a gentle breeze swept through, sending the sheer gossamer train and purple ribbon bows drifting in the air, that unexpected kinetic beauty felt far more vibrant than static posing. Sorting through these frames washed away all the day's exhaustion. Being able to document costume details and fleeting character states in an authentic convention setting with the grace of natural light is deeply fulfilling for any cosplayer, and I hope these photos share that vivid, lively convention pulse with everyone.
