Wearing a down jacket in 29°C Guangzhou sounds like pure exaggeration, but to cosplay Tianyuanji today, I gritted my teeth and put on that heavy pink coat. Sweat was already dripping before I even reached the venue, but to do justice to the character, the heat was a small price to pay.
Preparing this look required careful styling. The white wig had to be cut into blunt bangs first, then braided neatly on both sides while intertwining cyan accent cords through the hair to add visual depth. For eye makeup, brilliant blue contacts were paired with deepened eyeshadow and eyeliner to ensure facial features popped under noisy convention hall lighting from a distance. The blue teardrop mark on my cheek was drawn freehand with precision eyeliner—the slightest misalignment meant erasing and starting over, but the clean result made the patience worthwhile.
Two sets of shots were taken on-site. The first featured an orange hoodie, lively and bright, but background foot traffic was cluttered and a small watermark in the corner distracted from the shot, so it was skipped for the cover. The second look featured this pink-and-black color-blocked down coat, unzipped at the collar to reveal collarbones and a choker for a lighter, flattering silhouette. Centering myself in the selfie frame allowed the lighting to highlight the vivid blue contacts and facial mark with sharp eye contact, making it the clear choice for the cover.
Braving an Anime convention wrapped in winter outerwear in tropical heat was unforgettable. Even with strong air conditioning indoors, the heavy padding made sweat trickle down my neck as I navigated the enthusiastic crowds, genuinely feeling like a 2D persona stepping into the real world. Frequent makeup touch-ups kept the look intact. Bringing a beloved character into reality through cosplay makes all the sweat worthwhile. Taking off the heavy coat and wig back at the hotel brought pure relief, marking a successful end to this Guangzhou Firefly ACG Expo run.
