The newly crafted Eyepatch is finally ready! My imagination ran wild on this build: I literally strapped a portable power bank directly onto the Eyepatch harness with tactical bands, all to capture that functional combat rig aesthetic befitting the wielder of the Wicked Eye. Standard medical patches always felt a bit too mundane; looking back at Rikka's lore in Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions, the idea of having a cable running straight from the patch into an external power source created an unbeatable fusion of sci-fi cybernetics and chunibyo melodrama.
Preparing for this cosplay involved immense preliminary trial and error. Trimming and styling the wig took several days—the main goal was achieving a slightly tousled, airy volume that looks intentionally disheveled without appearing unkempt, using pomade to sculpt the side-swept locks into defined layers. For cosmetics, I wore a vibrant bright-blue contact lens in one eye, paired with bold black eyeliner and crimson lips to maximize ocular contrast and make that solitary azure eye look intensely luminous. The foundation was kept porcelain-pale and matte, creating a sharp graphic impact against the electric blue iris. The crisp shirt collar and large red ribbon bow were sourced canonically, layered under a warm beige knit vest to provide cozy contrast against the cool-toned technical Eyepatch.
My desktop is typically cluttered with glowing RGB gaming peripherals and tangled cables; while I initially considered booking a professional photo studio, testing a few test snaps revealed that this lived-in tech environment was unexpectedly fitting. It felt as if Rikka had broken the 2D dimensional barrier, stepping straight out of a chaotic cyberspace. Actually shooting was quite an obstacle course: the power bank and thick cable carried real weight, causing the Eyepatch to slide down at the slightest movement, while the stiff wire repeatedly snagged my meticulously styled bangs. To support the load, I anchored multiple bobby pins and clear silicone bra straps into the wig interior. While it held relatively steady, the continuous tugging against my scalp proved that being a chunibyo definitely comes with a physical cost.
Regarding the character herself, I have always adored Rikka's gap-moe charm—on the outside, she is flamboyant and constantly spouting esoteric lore, yet deep down she is profoundly innocent, timid, and earnest. For this set, I wanted to lean into an Absurdist internet slang vibe with comedic theatricality. In the first selfie, I struck a dramatic sideways hand flourish, and in the second, a crisp 'OK' gesture, both aiming to project an absurd energy: 'Behold my supreme technological armament... which is actually just a phone charger.' Because the connecting cord was somewhat short, my head rotations and poses had to stay tightly confined within the webcam's FOV. While the finished frames appear casual and spontaneous, every single one was struck under ridiculously awkward, strained contortions.
The most intoxicating aspect of cosplay is building a character from scratch—from eccentric prop modding and makeup adjustments to finally sinking into the character's internal headspace. While this Eyepatch build was undeniably clunky, the final imagery achieved the exact balance of hilarity and coolness I had envisioned. Regardless of whether others find this contraption eccentric, having fun and channeling the unvarnished chunibyo soul of the character makes it utterly fulfilling.
