Today's sporty style Rikka cosplay was built entirely around a White studio portrait setup and volleyball themes, from styling to studio staging. The wig was sculpted with the character's signature cowlick (ahoge) and yellow mini hair scrunchie, while the punctured white eye patch over the right eye was tied with fine cords, complemented by a vivid blue contact lens in the left eye. For the outfit, I wore a white polo shirt edged in red piping and navy gym shorts trimmed with white stripes, paired with white over-the-knee socks and a slender silver bangle on the left wrist for a clean, tailored finish. Shooting in an infinity white studio, the primary prop was a regulation tri-color volleyball in blue, yellow, and white. To ensure the subject and White stockings popped cleanly against the pure white cyclorama without blending into the backdrop, the photographer dedicated immense care to lighting, employing raking rim lights to carve out body contours.
The first sequence captured the airborne leap of receiving a pass, freezing the suspended body and extended arms mid-air while keeping my facial expression composed—after several takes, my leg muscles were burning. Photos 2 and 6 explored seated postures; kneeling atop a cylindrical plinth to create the illusion of a naturally levitating volleyball was achieved by suspending the ball with clear monofilament wire, later erased in post-production. Photos 3 and 4 were also staged on the plinth; Photo 4 in particular aimed to flatter leg lines and the White stockings by leaning into a three-quarter back-reclined posture—one hand bracing the plinth, one knee bent, and the other leg stretched forward. This stance heavily tested core stability, requiring locked abdominal muscles to preserve balance, with the volleyball resting beside me as a thematic accent.
Photo 5 incorporated a wooden classroom desk and chair, leaning over the desk cradling the volleyball to evoke the relaxed ease of school recess. The entire shoot was a relentless test of stamina and patience; wearing slick white over-the-knee socks on polished plinths and glossy studio floors made slipping an ever-present risk, requiring me to straighten the sock cuffs after every adjustment. The volleyball was an inflated regulation ball, demanding pinpoint catches to avoid colliding with my face or camera gear. Although an all-white cyc delivers an immaculate background, it harshly exposes garment creases and unwanted shadows, requiring constant smoothing of hemlines and lighting tweaks between takes.
With vision obscured on the eye-patch side, tracking the camera relied entirely on muscle memory and the photographer's vocal directions. Leaps appeared weightless, yet landing repeatedly demanded centered balance to keep from slipping in stocking feet. Because the shirt was a relaxed fit, it easily bunched while seated, requiring clips along the back to preserve a sharp silhouette before the lens. The volleyball prop also presented technical quirks: its textured surface reflected hot spots under high-output strobes, requiring a polarizing filter on the lens to tame glare. The entire crew worked tirelessly in the studio, with every frame shuttered only after exhaustive adjustments to posture and light. The final collection radiates an infectious, energetic athletic charm—marking a refreshing visual exploration for this beloved character.
