From preparation to the actual shoot, this Takanashi Rikka swimsuit cosplay underwent countless detail adjustments.
First, let's talk about the purple two-piece swimsuit. The ruffled design can easily create a bulky look on camera, especially in water or on the sand, where an uncalculated angle can make the waistline look wider than it is. To keep the silhouette feeling visually light, I intentionally chose a purple fabric with a slight metallic sheen and adjusted the lighting setup accordingly. We were shooting by the water at dusk when ambient light was extremely dim. We used a softbox equipped with diffuser fabric positioned at a 45-degree angle in the front-slant direction, angled slightly low to cast light subtly upward. This not only gave the skin a luminous, translucent glow but also deepened side and waist shadows, creating a leaner, more sculpted silhouette without washing out the dramatic shadow cast by the eyepatch on my face.
Speaking of Rikka's signature accessory, the white medical eyepatch over the right eye is an absolute must. Wearing it for long periods puts painful pressure on the ear, so for breathability, I chose a slightly thinner material. Although this showed a faint hint of skin tone underneath, we slightly toned it down in post-processing. Styling the wig was another massive endeavor. That iconic ahoge (cowlick) couldn't afford to droop, so I used plenty of styling spray and added invisible reinforcement at the roots. The small yellow scrunchie on top was also tracked down specifically to match the canon look. I spent a long time trimming the back hair, even inserting a hair bump pad underneath to maintain that rounded, inward-curving bob silhouette. For the left eye, I wore a vivid blue contact lens; the eye makeup wasn't applied heavily, focusing mainly on tightlining and an exaggerated lower lid drop (eyelid-down) technique to preserve that uniquely anime, innocent aura despite the chuunibyou persona.
The first picture was taken right by the water; the pose with both hands atop my head was designed around her character setting, resembling her casting some magical boundary or ward. For the second shot, we moved to the beach, where the pink water gun in hand was an impromptu prop. While not strictly in the original character design, it was added to enliven the composition and capture Rikka's occasional playful, energetic side. The flip-flops with dark blue floral accents were also picked to complement the overall color palette. Walking along that rocky gravel beach was perilous with every step, and the fierce winds nearly blew the water gun into the water while knocking the eyepatch loose several times. To get the best shots, everyone braved the freezing winds by the water and pushed through.
The overall mood aimed to cultivate a cool summer aesthetic with a touch of melancholy and mystery. The raw shots were quite dark, so during post-color grading, the color temperature was slightly lifted to make skin tones appear fair and translucent while preserving the deep, mysterious midnight-blue hue of the water. The combination of an eyepatch and a bikini is undoubtedly demanding to pull off and requires strict posture control, but fortunately, the final fidelity lived up to my expectations. From costume material selection to lighting harmony, I strove to stay true to Rikka's character in every single detail, and I hope everyone can feel the care poured into this shoot.
