Outside the venue of the CICF Expo, the sunlight was truly dazzling, making it hard to even keep my eyes open when it shone down directly. What I prepared this time is Seiran cosplay. From the makeup test to the actual on-site shooting, the entire process was a struggle against strong light. To match Lizzy Seiran's temperament in "I Want to Love You Till Your Dying Day", a lot of thought went into the makeup and styling beforehand.
In terms of hairstyle, the base of long straight black hair plus a high updo and blunt bangs looks simple, but actually the wig is very prone to getting frizzy from the wind outdoors. During the convention photoshoot, I had to smooth it out frequently and pay attention to the curve of the sideburns to ensure smooth lines when looking back. The makeup heavily emphasized the red eyeshadow and red eyes, paired with small red stud earrings, making it very eye-catching under strong light. This dark blue sailor suit has a great texture, and the white-striped collar and cuffs have a high contrast under the sunlight. Although the silver chain accessory at the collar is small, it adds a sense of layering to the styling in close-up shots.
The bouquet of white lilies held in my hand is the core prop of the entire frame. To keep the stamens and petals intact, I held it carefully all the way, fearing that pollen would smear onto the dark blue clothes. Choosing the glass curtain wall as the shooting location was actually an accidental discovery. The reflective glass not only mirrored the crowd at the convention behind, but also created a unique sense of space. We used an external fill light to balance the natural light and the shadows in the backlit areas, allowing facial details and flower textures to be clearly presented. Especially during that sideways glance back, the light just outlined the contour, and the contrast between the black long hair and the white lilies instantly maxed out the atmospheric vibe.
The convention site was crowded and lively, with many photographers holding long lenses around. Everyone was very friendly and would give way to each other during shooting breaks. Although the weather was hot and walking back and forth outside the venue wearing a long-sleeved sailor suit made me sweat, seeing Seiran's aloof yet slightly obsessive look in the final photos made me feel that all this hard work was worth it. The language of lilies matches the tone of the work "I Want to Love You Till Your Dying Day" very well, and every time the shutter is pressed, it is an attempt to preserve that quiet yet firm feeling. The overall photo output effect is very close to my expectations in mind, and thanks to the friends who helped with lighting on-site.
This CICF Expo photoshoot actually encountered quite a few challenges. Aside from the high temperature and strong light, the camera position in front of the glass curtain wall also needed continuous adjustment because the reflections changed as passersby walked around. Sometimes right after finding a good angle, a crowd would reflect behind, but this instead gave the frame a bit of a documentary feel. We repeatedly tried different sideways angles on-site, and finally found that slightly turning back with the gaze looking slightly downward at the lens best reflected Lizzy Seiran's personality background. The entire shoot took over an hour, with a few makeup touch-ups in between, and the positions of the wig and lilies were rearranged several times. Being able to smoothly complete this set of convention photos is inseparable from the repeated deliberation of the character setting. Afterward, I might look for another opportunity to shoot in an indoor studio to make up for the regrets brought by the harsh outdoor light, striving to express the delicate emotional tension in the work even better.
