Today's Hu Tao Swimsuit set was completed inside a clean White studio. When I first received this outfit, I felt it was tailor-made for sporty themes. To lean into her spunky, cheerful personality, I brought along a standard yellow, blue, and white tri-color volleyball as a prop.
The top is a semi-sheer white crew-neck tee trimmed with deep navy piping along the collar and cuffs, paired with form-fitting athletic shorts in the same navy shade accented by white side stripes. Because the textile is lightweight and slightly see-through, studio strobes easily accentuate fabric folds and reveal silhouette flaws. I spent a long time dialing in the seamless foundations underneath, striving for a visual balance that looked crisp, refreshing, and subtly alluring.
The wig was styled into her classic long black twintails. To heighten the 2D aesthetic, I added plush fox Animal ears in black, white, and orange, along with an exceptionally voluminous white tail. The tail was anchored low around my hip line, which made it prone to being crushed whenever I sat down; my assistant had to gently fluff and reposition it between every take so it retained its fluffy silhouette without looking awkward. For makeup, beyond deepening eye contours, I added extra blush to amplify her youthful, energetic vibe.
The opening pose had me sitting sideways on a white cylindrical pedestal, clutching the ball tightly against my chest with both hands. This pose demanded solid core and back strength—you can't simply slouch into your lower back; you have to keep the spine elongated with relaxed shoulders for organic contours. Looking directly into the lens called for a relaxed gaze laced with subtle, playful cunning.
Next, I transitioned to perching on the stool and raising my legs to grip the volleyball between my feet. This action was slightly tricky: because the shorts are snug, dynamic movement required utmost care to keep the hemline tidy, preventing exposure or unsightly creases. I had the photographer shoot from a low angle, which elongated leg contours and created strong visual punch. I also knotted the tee at my waist to reveal a hint of midriff, breaking up any monotony in the silhouette.
Subsequent setups included sitting with knees parted naturally while pressing down on the ball, as well as a sweet, demure pose resting one foot atop the ball with legs crossed. To project an athletic girl's vibrant charm, I kept my gaze steady and focused, keeping facial expressions softly relaxed without overexertion. The beauty of shooting in a White studio lies in the clean, balanced illumination: post-production required minimal color correction, needing only subtle adjustments to skin tones and contrast to let the yellow, blue, and white palette shine through comfortably.
I'm thoroughly thrilled with this series—the lighting was crisp, the candid snaps were effortless, and it captured the lively pulse of summer athleticism. Every time I cosplay Hu Tao, I fall in love with her blend of perky energy and wild charm all over again. While this swimsuit lacks the ornate layers of her default battle gear, minimalist designs rely all the more on physical poise and camera presence to carry the frame.
