Nao Tomori from Charlotte, holding her signature camcorder, completed this photoshoot on an outdoor walkway at three in the afternoon.
The preparation for this shoot focused heavily on styling and props. The silver twin-tail wig required curling to a specific angle to capture the character's lively dynamism; for eye makeup, light blue contact lenses were layered with reddish-orange eyeshadow to enhance the gaze's piercing clarity. The costume is a red sailor suit paired with a large yellow bow, a wine-red pleated skirt, Black stockings, and brown buckle boots. The white trims on the cuffs and skirt hem had to be ironed flat; otherwise, they would easily look sloppy.
During the shoot, I asked the photographer to bring a wide-aperture lens, leveraging the afternoon side-backlight hitting my hair to create crisp rim lighting. The trees and shrubs along the path offered excellent background bokeh, keeping the frame clean and distraction-free. In terms of posing, I focused on interacting with the camcorder in hand—such as prodding my cheek, looking back over my shoulder, or using a half-crouching pose to accentuate the lines of my legs and Black stockings. The selected cover image utilizes a half-kneeling pose, which is not only centered in composition but also balances the color proportions between the black stockings and the skirt, establishing a clear visual focus.
Natural light changes quickly outdoors, so we moved fast to capture dynamic movement. Sunlight filtering through the leaves cast dappled patterns across the skirt naturally. In post-processing, we avoided excessive skin-smoothing to preserve natural skin textures, mainly warming up the highlights and slightly darkening the background greenery to make the red outfit pop, bringing the overall palette closer to the anime.
The prop was my own silver camcorder; it got a bit heavy after holding it for a while, but interacting with props is essential to bringing the character to life. Taking this kind of Outdoor portrait during a convention requires planning routes ahead to avoid peak crowds and ensure clean Convention photos. Considerable thought went into styling details and framing composition, from focal eye angles to the grip on the camcorder. Looking back at the raw photos now, the lighting atmosphere and character portrayal fully lived up to expectations.
