After finishing this set of Duke of York photos at the anime convention, sorting through the pictures made me feel again how striking this red suit ensemble turned out. This time I cosplayed Duke of York from Azur Lane. Rather than traditional military dress uniforms, I chose this design leaning toward an Office Lady style commuter vibe—a red suit jacket paired with a white lapel shirt and black bow tie, a black tube top underneath, along with a black short skirt and glossy stockings. The striking contrast of red, black, and white delivers both the majesty of a battleship and the sleek competence of everyday workplace attire.
As for makeup, I specifically used blue contact lenses to enhance the gaze, adding fine freckles/marks across the bridge of the nose and cheeks. Paired with transparent chain glasses, it instantly brought out the character's intellectual aura and subtle pride. The elf ears were the soul accessory—putting them on completely transformed the head silhouette, which, combined with long straight pink hair, drew a really high turn-around rate at the convention.
The shooting venue was an unfinished industrial-style warehouse with rough concrete floors, exposed steel frames overhead, and dim ceiling lights. Photographer @Pulao411 is adept at using such cold, hard environments to contrast against vibrant subjects. He used a single hard light source from the side-front, capturing the texture of the red suit, the reflections on the stockings, and the sheen of the patent leather high heels. With the background darkened, the subject instantly popped out with strong three-dimensionality.
Actually, what tested this outfit most was the combination of stockings and high heels. Glossy black stockings reflect very clear lines under hard light, placing high demands on leg postures—standing slightly off can make leg shapes look less smooth. During shooting, I repeatedly adjusted my center of gravity. The side cross-standing posture shown in the photo (selected as the cover) with the front foot pointed and the rear foot supporting, combined with the elongating effect of black patent leather pointed stiletto heels, visually extended leg proportions beautifully. The cinched waist design of the red suit was also key, which, together with the black tube top peaking out at the neckline, maintained character dignity while adding a subtle touch of alluring charm.
When shooting this mature, intellectual style of cosplay, controlling expressions is far more crucial than action poses. It shouldn't be too sweet or too cold—Duke of York feels like the type who is completely in control and occasionally teases you. So I intentionally added small gestures in several shots—such as tugging the neckline, lightly tapping my chin with an index finger, or putting hands on my hips—these micro body movements bring a narrative feel to the imagery. Sitting on the black iron ladder added a touch of casual ease; resting a leg casually and relaxing the whole body actually made the aura feel more grounded and confident.
In post-processing, no excessive retouching was applied, mostly preserving the contrast of light and shadow on-site along with skin textures. In such a rugged environment, over-smoothing skin would erase that authentic \"convention photos\" flavor. I believe the core of cosplay convention photos is restoring the character's intrinsic aura rather than chasing generic internet trends, so this photo set leans toward realism and dramatic lighting.
Shooting day was actually quite exhausting—walking back and forth in high heels on concrete floors and climbing up and down to find angles—but seeing the final result convey such a sleek yet elegant feel made it all worth it. The character Duke of York in Azur Lane is deeply charming herself, and being able to interpret her through my own vision was a satisfying experience as a cosplayer. If there's an opportunity later, I plan to try out her other skin styles to contrast expressive power across different looks.
