This official set of Kasumizawa Miyu in her yukata theme was photographed on a pebble riverbank at night. From styling to shooting, we hit a few snags but gained valuable experience. Centering on the character's yukata appearance, the outfit was pre-selected with a spliced pattern of black-and-white botanical motifs and horizontal stripes. This seemingly simple black-and-white palette really tests fabric texture, requiring bold contrasting tones to break up visual monotony. To boost contrast, we chose a bright green obi to echo the white bird hair ornament, focusing visual attention on the red contacts and black hair. The wig was styled in twin braids; before heading out, we adjusted the sideburns and crown volume, using plenty of hairspray on the ahoge to keep it standing upright against the wind.
The location was deliberately chosen beside a river far from ambient city lights. Without artificial illumination, nighttime shooting would introduce heavy noise, so lighting was handled mainly with a single key light combining direct and off-camera flash. Direct flash onto the subject gave the skin a translucent glow, while reflections off the water created hard, dramatic contrast. The dark stones on the ground were shiny with natural specular highlights, which helped outline leg contours without letting the frame sink entirely into darkness.
This shoot was completed completely Barefoot. Stepping on cold pebbles at night was icy and painful, demanding serious composure. To capture playful character energy, I tried single-leg balancing and seated poses on the boulders. Sitting naturally elongated leg lines while showcasing bare feet, blending with subtle expressions to project her pure, innocent disposition. Being Barefoot alongside discarded geta clogs on the ground added narrative storytelling, hinting at her casual yet scatterbrained personality.
In other full-body captures, we brought out a Sparkler. The sparks served as natural light sources that illuminated the scene while leading visual focus. For shots close to the face, we had to time the burn rate, angle away from heavy smoke, and watch that flying sparks wouldn't scorch the fabric or wig. This left the photographer with a tiny window of opportunity, demanding pre-planned poses and expressions in a race against time.
In post-processing, contrast between blacks and whites was refined, the wet sheen of the pebbles was enhanced, and comic symbol overlays were added above the head to visualize the girl's shy fluster and playfulness. Controlling nighttime exposure required careful light output adjustments—neither blowing out the patterned fabric into a chalky white nor crushing the background into an undifferentiated void. Between dodging sharp rocks Barefoot and waiting for calm lulls in the riverside wind to keep the wig neat, this Night portrait session was physically demanding, yet capturing this evocative Yukata cosplay made every second worthwhile.
