Cosplaying Tamamo no Mae at this year's CICF Anime Expo was an immensely rewarding journey from start to finish. The highlight of this outfit lies in its bold color contrast: vibrant, highly saturated blue paired with an inner black-and-white bustier. I specifically selected a fabric with substantial weight and a graceful drape, ensuring that the billowing wide sleeves flowed with effortless elegance as I walked the convention floor. The neckline features a classic off-the-shoulder cut accented with a white, black-trimmed mandarin collar adorned with a ring motif; this not only flatters the neck and collarbones, but also elevates the character's unique blend of divine grace and alluring charm.
Styling the wig and headpieces was paramount for character fidelity. For her iconic long pink hair, I dedicated ample time to layer-cutting and thinning out the side tendrils, using generous amounts of styling products to lock in the curves of the bangs and loose strands so they wouldn't fall flat under the convention hall's heat and crowded humidity. The fluffy plush animal ears atop my head were carefully selected and secured doubly with bobby pins and hairnets—after all, bowing or striking broader poses at a con could easily cause them to slip.
For makeup, the eyes were undoubtedly the focal point. I applied a pink-orange eyeshadow as a sweeping base wash, deepening and elongating the outer corners, and paired it with hazel-green/brown contact lenses to mirror her eye shape. The eyeliner was drawn with a distinct upward flick to inject a hint of fox-like cunning. The base makeup relied on a clean matte foundation with double setting, which was essential for sweat-proof, all-day longevity throughout the convention. A mirror-finish lip glaze gave the lips a subtle, pouty plumpness.
Stepping onto the CICF show floor, it was bustling with massive crowds, but the anime passion was absolutely palpable. Working with photographers before the backdrop panels required a few handy posing tricks to flatter the garment. When standing front-on, I slightly tucked my chest and core while placing my hands in front of my bust, which showcased the low-cut neckline while letting the expansive sleeves drape into flattering folds. For over-the-shoulder glancing poses, shifting my center of gravity to the rear foot and twisting from the waist accentuated the waist-to-hip curve, naturally displaying the Black stockings (over-the-knee socks) across the thighs. Incorporating Black stockings not only anchored the overall look visually, but also elongated leg proportions, making it a true eye-catching highlight of the entire ensemble.
Navigating the bustling hall in this attire definitely came with mobility challenges—the voluminous sleeves caught on things easily, and eating or drinking required extreme caution. Yet none of that dampened the joy of connecting, trading photos, and chatting with fellow fans. Bringing a beloved character to life in the real world and receiving warm appreciation from the community offers a sense of fulfillment like nothing else. Every shutter click was the sweetest reward for all the heartfelt preparation.
