Shooting this Jet Black Mage Garb set for Tamamo no Mae took a lot of thought and preparation, from custom costume tailoring to prop arrangement. My first impression upon receiving the outfit was the sheer wealth of details—primarily a black-and-gold color palette, accented with metallic gold O-rings and strappings across the chest and abdomen, plus a hollow backless design. The sleeves are detachable flare sleeves layered with grayish-black ruffles, adding immense dimensional depth. However, wearing it requires meticulously adjusting the shoulder straps and choker collar; otherwise, they shift easily during posing. The fabric leans toward a subtle shimmering satin, which yields a soft, velvety texture under the lights.
The wig consists of long, straight pink hair with neatly trimmed ends. The fluffy animal ears atop the head are secured doubly with an inner headband and hidden bobby pins, staying firmly anchored throughout an entire afternoon of active shooting. The mini black top hat and light blue ribbon serve as key focal points of the ensemble, yet they tend to slip during wider motions, demanding constant position checks to keep from obscuring my eyes. On the makeup front, the focus was placed on deepening the eye contours to complement the bold red lips, harmonizing with the overarching black-and-gold theme.
The set was adorned with red roses, a decorative gold birdcage, and a vintage brown leather sofa. The vivid crimson of the red roses pops dramatically against the dark-toned setting. The red cord held in my hands worked as a wonderful interactive prop; wrapping it around the fingers or tugging it gently infused subtle dynamic tension into the frames. While lying inside the birdcage installation, carefully managing the torso angle was crucial to flatter leg silhouettes while keeping facial composure serene. The over-the-knee black stockings paired with ring-garter accents are undeniable highlights of this look, crisply tracing leg lines whether seated or lying on my side.
This shoot utilized a Fujifilm X-S10 body paired with a 27mm f/1.2 lens. The wide aperture offered huge advantages in the low-light environment, preserving exceptional image cleanliness. The on-set lighting relied on interwoven red and blue atmospheric lights against a deep crimson backdrop drape, weaving a rich, cohesive tonal atmosphere. Due to complex lighting conditions, the photographer dedicated significant effort to metering and portrait capture, especially controlling catchlights within the eyes to keep the gaze sharp and lively. Between takes, we continuously discussed pose transitions and angles, figuring out how to incorporate the candelabras and red apples to deepen the scene's storytelling.
The finished set blends a magician's enigma with touches of dark fantasy, and the resulting photos turned out to be an absolute pleasant surprise.
