The design of this gym uniform is actually quite fascinating: a navy blue short-sleeved tee paired with a blue-and-white athletic jacket looks like basic sportswear at first glance, but once worn, it truly radiates the youthful energy of school life. Hayase Yuuka's hairstyle was quite a challenge; her long purple hair needed to be styled with natural soft waves while keeping a casual touch. To nail this look, I spent considerable time scouting the right interior lighting.
We chose an equipment storage room as our location. The rustic wooden benches, grey metal lockers, and scattered volleyballs and basketballs formed a perfect natural backdrop. The blue halo floating overhead was the soul of the look; although on set it was just a wire frame, combined with the overall hair and makeup, it truly felt like an anime character stepping into reality. To match the gym uniform theme, I also prepped a Millennium-branded ID badge, and the black lanyard around my neck added that extra bit of realistic detail.
The photographer was fantastic at utilizing the natural light filtering through the window blinds. Those slatted patterns of light and shadow falling across the floor and wooden bench created a warm ambient glow that maxed out the lazy afternoon vibe. Because the indoor lighting was quite complex, I continually adjusted my posture to catch the light. Sitting on the bench, to show off more natural leg lines, I experimented with bending one leg or crossing them, using the volleyball as a prop so my hands had a natural resting point and my gaze appeared more relaxed.
Interacting with props was equally essential. For example, the yellow 'Out of Service' warning sign and the clothing rack hung with numbered jerseys served as wonderful atmospheric touches. In one shot, I knelt on the floor with several colorful plastic balls and a water bottle scattered nearby; casually taking a sip after a workout gave the shot an authentic slice-of-life feel. I also tried slipping the jacket half off my shoulders—that slightly nonchalant, carefree look was far more expressive than wearing it buttoned up properly.
For makeup, to stay true to the character's demeanor, the eye makeup focused on deepening the socket contour and subtly elongating the eyeliner, paired with purple colored contacts to make the eyes look vivid and alert. The base makeup needed to be fresh and translucent to maintain a healthy facial glow in the dimmer indoor setting. The wig fibers had to be combed smooth without looking rigid, leaving a few wispy strands across the forehead for a lively, dimensional effect.
The storage room had a very distinct scent—a subtle blend of worn leather and dry wood. In such a space, fiddling with sports gear made it remarkably easy to immerse into the character. Although the outfit appears simple, capturing an aesthetic that feels both mundane and visually compelling requires constant fine-tuning. For example, when sitting on the floor, keeping the back straight is key—even in a relaxed pose, the body must maintain poise and core tension.
The entire shoot moved at a brisk pace as we were essentially racing against the sun, given how quickly natural lighting shifts. By shifting the position of the wooden bench and my orientation, we captured a variety of dappled light effects. The colorful balls and cardboard boxes on the floor, originally clutter, became wonderful leading lines under the camera lens. Looking at the final photos, they faithfully recreate the girl I envisioned: athletic yet gentle and delicate. It felt like an equipment room after class bathed in a passing ray of sunlight, preserving a quiet and tender moment. That was exactly what I wanted—nothing forced, just natural charm shining through.
