This photoshoot features a fan-made design cosplay look of Reimu Hakurei from Touhou Project. Unlike the traditional appearance of the red and white miko outfit, this fan-made design perfectly blends the charm of Japanese style with the intricacy of Lolita fashion. The gorgeous blue and white skirt is multi-layered, and the wide sleeves are full of flowing grace. The exaggerated big blue bow on the head, accented with a small metal ornament in the center, gives the overall look a substantial presence. The yellow bowtie on the chest serves as the finishing touch, breaking up the dullness of the cool color palette.

The prop in my hand is a long black staff with light blue ribbons attached. Rather than a weapon, it feels more like an extension of ritualism. Within the setting of exorcising monsters, it seems to channel fluctuations of spiritual energy. The poses actually put my sense of balance to the test, especially when holding the staff high with one hand while constantly making sure the skirt didn't drag too much on the ground.

The shooting location was a very traditional Japanese washitsu room, with shoji doors and tatami mats as standard background elements. The warm yellow Japanese lanterns placed in the set created a strong visual contrast with the icy blue cool tones of the outfit. Intertwining warmth and coolness, the natural atmosphere of the scene was pushed to the max. The photographer's meticulous control over light and shadow allowed the hidden patterns and lace borders on the dress to look more layered under the light.

For post-processing, I used PixCake software. It is truly exceptional at preserving textures for such intricate outfits packed with detail, while removing fabric wrinkles and flaws, and allowing for fine adjustments to the makeup and catchlights in the eyes. In particular, brightening the highlights in the eyes made the blue pupils appear clearer and more transparent, while the overall skin texture became smoother and more natural.

As the guardian shrine maiden of Gensokyo, Reimu Hakurei is often remembered for her heroic manner as she decisively waves talismans to exorcise demons. My interpretation of this somewhat elegant and slightly gorgeous fan-made design focuses more on showing her relaxed yet ritualistic side in daily life. Shooting in such a heavy, voluminous dress is actually a technical challenge; sitting and squatting postures must be carefully managed, or the skirt can easily lose its shape under pressure.

But looking at the final results, all the hard work feels completely worth it. Perhaps the daily life of Gensokyo exists precisely within this kind of serenity. Expressing another side of a character through the lens is what I find most fascinating about cosplay. This attempt at Reimu Hakurei's fan-made design can be counted as adding a rather satisfying little chapter to my creative records.
