[Kochiya Sanae Cosplay] The Reed Field When the Wind Rises, Dancing with Nature - Image 1

Standing amidst the golden reeds, the wind blows from the distant mountains and lake surface, carrying the unique crispness and dryness of late autumn. This shoot selected this wide-open wetland, just in time for the clouds to filter through soft light. The lighting wasn't glaring, yet it was enough to outline the reeds' texture as fuzzy and fluffy. The white-and-green attire I'm wearing features an inherently lightweight design for the skirt hem and cuffs. When the wind rises, they naturally lift up, the skirt corners drawing a beautiful arc, and the long-handled prop held in my hand sways along with the movements. The entire frame doesn't need much intentional posing; the wind is the best guide.

Doing a cosplay shoot outdoors, especially content that heavily relies on the natural environment, tests one's anticipation of changes in light and airflow the most. The reeds are very high; if the wind is too strong, the hair and clothes will be completely messed up, blocking the face; if there is no wind at all, it lacks that nimble and elegant feeling akin to a divine wind. Today, luck was on our side, as the wind force maintained a moderate level, just enough to make the clothes flutter without letting the bangs obscure my eyes. The photographer was exceptionally good at capturing these dynamic moments, having me walk back and forth in the reed field a few times beforehand to familiarize myself with the firmness of the soil and how much the reed roots trip the feet. Then, a slightly tiptoed position was selected to ensure the captured body proportions look slender and won't feel cramped due to the obstruction of the reeds.

Regarding the holding method of the prop, I intentionally raised the long handle slightly higher than my line of sight, so that looking through the viewfinder, the pole forms an upward guide line, echoing the movement of the clouds in the sky. Meanwhile, to maintain a stable center of gravity, my left arm extended outward—it wasn't actually to make an exaggerated dance movement, but to balance the body weight, making the entire posture look more filled with tension rather than standing rigidly on the spot. In post-processing, almost no color grading was done, as the light and shadow of the raw photo were already comfortable enough. I only did basic skin tone unification and a bit of slight highlight softening, trying my best to preserve the dried yet warm golden-yellow tone of the reeds.

Many friends ask how to avoid the figure being submerged by the environment in this kind of grand scene shooting. My experience is that the color contrast must be clearly separated. The reeds are overall warm brown and beige, so cold white and light green were selected as the primary colors for the costume, with black as an accent, so it can naturally stand out in the frame. Meanwhile, during composition, the extended lines of the reeds on both sides were intentionally preserved, placing the figure slightly to the right of the frame, leaving a blank space of reeds and sky on the left to give the line of sight a sense of breathing. This attempt did not use a large aperture to blur the background, but instead used a smaller aperture to preserve the contours of the distant mountain ranges and water surfaces, making the environmental narrative feel stronger, like a scene from a storied folklore of Touhou Project.

The entire shoot took about an hour and a half, with makeup touched up twice in between, because the strong wind easily split the wig and bangs. The reflector board we brought along was used to fill the catchlight in the eyes, allowing a bit of the sky's blue to reflect in the pupils, which makes the gaze look much more spirited. Although walking on the soft mud was quite exhausting, seeing that natural and casual feel in the final photos makes all the preparation feel completely worth it. Every outdoor cosplay shoot is a process of re-communicating with the character and with nature. The reeds in this season are truly too suitable for shooting this kind of theme carrying a divine girl temperament; amidst the rustling of the grass in the wind, it feels as if one can truly capture a touch of unique aura from the light and shadow.
