To shoot the Lantern Rite hot spring theme well this time, a lot of effort really went into the preliminary preparation work. First starting with the costume, for this deep blue Chinese-cut dress, I chose a matte fabric with a slight velvet texture for the material. This way, under the refraction of lighting and water vapor, the layering of the deep blue becomes richer and avoids looking rigid. The black semi-transparent sheer gauze on the chest and the golden hollowed-out metal hanging ornaments are the finishing touches; to ensure the metal pieces didn't reflect too much light in front of the lens, I even specially treated them with a brushed matte finish before the shoot. As for the wig, the bright blue short hair required a lot of wispy styling. To present that natural, slightly wavy, and somewhat untamed layering, a large amount ofhairspray was used for fixation, and the red horn hair ornament on top of the head was also sculpted bit by bit by myself, paired with silver-white flower hair clips—the details had to be maxed out.
In terms of makeup, the red contact lenses were the soul. The eye makeup extensively used red-toned blending, focusing on elongating the outer corners of the eyes, paired with highlighter applied to the inner corners and under-eye bags, creating a cold, mysterious, and slightly dreamy demeanor. For the base makeup, I pursued extreme matte cleanliness, and to keep the makeup intact in the misty environment, setting spray was applied in three layers.
Scene arrangement was actually harder than imagined. To present a realistic misty feel, in front of the wooden platform and shoji door background, not only did we use an artificial smoke machine, but we also actually built a shallow pool. The biggest difficulty during the shoot was body posture control. Sitting by the pool's edge with legs crossed and dipped in the water required constantly tightening the core and keeping the back upright, while simultaneously striking a lazy and relaxed vibe. Especially for the sideways lying posture, the platform was actually very hard, and supporting myself with my arms was extremely strenuous, but for the sake of good lines, I just had to grit my teeth and persist. Wearing the gloves and leg rings was also quite particular; the geometric lines of the black long gloves and the golden metal rings on the legs both visually reinforced the character's fantastical attributes and increased the framing's layering. The red-and-blue contrasting tassel pendants swayed with movements, looking extremely photogenic in the smoke. For the overall lighting and shadows, we adopted an alternating warm-and-cool lighting method, where the warm lantern light intertwined with the cool reflections on the water surface, giving the frame a stronger atmospheric feel. From styling and makeup to set design, the refinement of every single link was meant to better recreate the character.
