This shoot was set in a vintage study room, using an R6 Mark II paired with an RF35mm VCM lens to record this Halloween cosplay of Rem cosplay from Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World-. The color temperature of the lighting was kept warm to make the reflections on the black leather outfit more pronounced while allowing the orange glow of the Jack-o'-lanterns to blend into the overall atmosphere.
The outfit was a black leather Witch costume with a slightly reflective texture, and the props included a witch hat, bat wings, and a red trident. The lens focused rapidly, and using a wide aperture nicely blurred the background to accentuate the subject while preserving the ambiance of the bookshelves.
We went through several pose sets: sitting on the sofa, standing, and half-kneeling. The 35mm focal length was ideal for this environment, elongating leg lines while still framing the setting. The texture of the garment tested metering under dim lighting, relying primarily on fill lights to illuminate facial features and body contours.
In standing poses, the positioning of the trident and Jack-o'-lanterns balanced the composition effectively. In close-ups, partially obscuring the face with limbs served as a great way to soften expression tension. Wearing only a miniskirt and high boots in a chilly room, the warm lighting kept the overall ambient light unified.
The lens performed well with anti-glare in low light, producing no noticeable flare around the vintage lamps on the bookshelves and spiderweb decorations. Post-processing mainly restored the iconic colors of Rem's blue hair and blue eyes; because the ambient lighting leaned yellow, in-camera white balance shifting was used during shooting to give the skin a translucent glow, creating a striking contrast against the black clothing.
To align with the Halloween theme, poses with strong visual impact were chosen—such as raising the red pitchfork or using the sofa as support—to better showcase the outfit and leg lines. The wide brim of the witch hat occasionally blocked the light source, requiring constant adjustments to light positioning to avoid shadows disrupting skin texture.
Communication during the shoot went smoothly. Leveraging the subtle perspective distortion of the 35mm lens at close range allowed us to flatter body proportions, particularly accentuating the leg-elongating effect of the high-heeled boots. Reflections from the red pitchfork prop and pumpkins served as great color accents, breaking the monotony of black and wood tones while balancing visual weight. As the outfit features a leather zipper design, it put high demands on body shape, yet its texture under this lighting suited a gothic or witch theme flawlessly.
Shooting this vintage, slightly magical concept was a delight. Combined with specific scene props, it helped express an unconventional visual texture for the character, making this Vintage study room photography feel like a narrative record.
