The convention shots from IJOY are finally retouched! For this event, I brought Li Bai to life and handled all the post-production myself, so I'd love to chat about the styling and share a few editing insights.
First, the wardrobe. The ensemble is predominantly black with exceptionally rich textural layering. The outer garment features prominent woven jacquard patterns with a crisp, structured silhouette, layered over soft black fabric beneath and cinched with metallic chains and a wide waist sash. Fastening the layers takes patience, but once donned, that austere, martial aura immediately comes to life. Platform combat boots and black leather gloves served as fantastic bonus touches, firmly anchoring the overall presence.
For hair and styling, I opted for a long wig with a purple-to-pink gradient. Atop the crown sat a pair of white beast ears, paired with a luxuriously plush white tail at the back. Animal ears and tails easily snag on garments or hair during conventions; for anyone planning similar looks, I recommend anchoring the bases securely with bobby pins in advance and keeping a pocket-sized steel comb handy to smooth out tangles immediately.
For posing, we chose a low single-knee crouch. Resting one hand near the knee with my head slightly lowered and eyes cast in a cold, piercing gaze created a sharp focus. The polished venue floor possessed a subtle specular reflection, beautifully catching both the subject's mirror image and the luminous VFX to introduce spatial depth. Sustaining this pose places noticeable strain on the lower back—remember to keep the spine elongated when shooting to prevent hunching, which can easily detract from the shot.
Regarding post-production, editing the images myself gave me a crystalline vision for the visual narrative. The colossal blue wolf phantom on the left was composited using layer blending modes. To make the apparition blend seamlessly, I dialed its opacity, feathering outer glows and integrating icy crystalline textures along the contours to make it appear as though rising organically from the ground. Rather than scattering chromatic petal particles haphazardly, I aligned them along the subject's dynamic flow and wind direction, clustering them tightly around the body and primary light sources to maintain kinetic motion without visual clutter.
Unlike studio photography, convention halls are crowded with chaotic ambient illumination. In post, beyond rendering the visual effects, I prioritized blurring and crushing the background exposure to ensure visual attention locks firmly onto the character and the blue phantom. The overall palette leans cool, accentuating the contrast among violet, cyan, and obsidian black.
This black fabric is notorious for attracting lint—especially white fur shedding from the tail—requiring diligent passes with a lint roller after every take. Seeing the final results, however, made every bit of tedious maintenance immensely worthwhile. I hope this breakdown offers helpful inspiration to fellow cosplayers who love hands-on post-production!
