Shooting Nangong Yu can be said to be something I have looked forward to for a long time. This time, I specially chose a pure white cyclorama studio because this black, white, and pink color-blocking design can best highlight the shape of the outfit against a white background. From the uniquely shaped cat ear headpiece with green edges on top of the head, to the large bows in red and blue color schemes, to the very thick black plush around the cuffs, as well as the detached black leather sleeves, long black leather boots, and red-bottomed straps on the legs—these elements pieced together create a very rich visual layering. In order to recreate that sense of lightness, all the hard components needed to be adjusted to fit snugly. In white studio photography, movements can be done more freely without worrying about a cluttered background stealing the spotlight.
Whether it was maintaining balance when lifting one leg or the naturalness of being captured while raising a hand to adjust a sleeve, the photographer and I tried out several different posing variations back and forth to find Nangong Yu's 'confident yet slightly sly' state. In the close-up shots, that small white cat mask decoration and the red-and-black checkered bow tie on the neck are key embellishments that break up the large areas of solid colors. The advantage of a white studio is that the light is distributed very evenly, allowing the reflections of the black leather, the texture of the white skirt hem, and even the touch of pink gradient at the ends of the hair to be processed cleanly and translucently.
Such a clean image focuses all the viewer's attention on the character's expression and outfit, making it a true test of the makeup and styling's completion. To match her iconic red eyes, the makeup deliberately intensified the color smudging around the eyes, giving her gaze that penetrating power typical of Anime cosplay. It was actually quite tiring during the shoot, as some candid poses required holding positions mid-air, but seeing the playback on the camera made it feel completely worth it. Compared to her other two teammates, Nangong Yu has a more free and casual quality, which is more easily amplified in a white studio. Putting on the whole outfit, although there were so many accessories that I needed someone to help me get dressed, the final results truly justified the hassle. From the very first shot to removing the makeup, my state stayed completely on point throughout. This white studio photography session can be considered a solid result delivered for the character of Nangong Yu.
