A lot of thought went into this Killjoy cosplay shoot, from preparation to the final photos. Killjoy in VALORANT is an intelligent character with a bit of a geeky attribute, so in the presentation of costumes and props, I paid special attention to the restoration of details. To showcase her technological vibe, the outer yellow down jacket used a very eye-catching material, the blue color-blocking design at the neckline and inner side was also precisely matched, along with the pink cross pattern on the sleeves and the wide pink belt at the waist. These high-saturation colors combined together looked particularly visually impactful in front of a pure white background.
For the wig part, I retained the blunt bangs setting and chose a pair of black-rimmed glasses, hoping to get closer to her temperament that is both calm and a bit quirky. The props in my hand, such as the floating swarm grenades and the huge mechanical device beside them, went through several versions of paint adjustments back and forth, and the internal light-emitting components were also concealed to ensure that the orange core light source could still be seen under the strong light of the studio shoot.
The shooting process actually had high physical demands. The posture in Figure 3 of kneeling on one knee while holding the glasses looks very relaxed, but in reality, to maintain balance and let the costume's silhouette show the best state, I adjusted my center of gravity many times. The low-squat posture in Figure 2 tests core strength even more, while also ensuring that the bulky mechanical device doesn't peek out; if the body angle is slightly off, the overall feel of the image will be much worse.
Studio shooting with a pure white background severely tests the color texture of the costume and the character's emotional expression. Without the enhancement of the environment, all attention was focused on the character. The lighting engineer used hard light to shape the metal texture of the mechanical device, and also used soft light to ensure the translucent texture of the facial skin. This set of photos didn't have unnecessary special effect post-processing; it just wanted to present the physical texture of the costume and props themselves authentically. Every time I cosplay such a character with complex equipment and many props, although the process is very tiring, seeing the images presented on the screen makes all these efforts feel completely worthwhile. I hope this set of photos can convey Killjoy's unique mechanical charm.
Regarding the wearing experience of this costume, the inner filling of the yellow jacket is very thick; although it ensures a crisp silhouette, it also restricted the range of motion quite a bit. To avoid ugly wrinkles at the joints, I tried my best to maintain the extension of movements during the shooting process. The black pants on the lower body feature a ripped design, paired with thick-soled black-and-white canvas shoes and purple short socks. Although these details are inconspicuous, they are indispensable parts forming the character's complete image. The setting of the swarm grenades next to the mechanical device dropping near the feet also added some story sense and dynamic tension to the picture. In action design, I intentionally imitated the composure and focus when controlling machinery, keeping my gaze as cold and focused as possible, and matching it with the actions on my hands to create an atmosphere intertwined with technology and reality. In the future, if there is still an opportunity to cosplay such characters full of mechanical feel, I hope to challenge more complex scenes and continue to improve my prop making and action performance abilities.
