"Here's the rain you asked for—bottoms up." Just as those words echoed, raindrops clattered crisply against the Transparent umbrella. At that moment, I was by the stream working through this Sailor suit shoot. Joining the casual walk session hosted by the Great Voyage Photo Gathering, we chose an authentic rocky stream valley for the outdoor location, packing all our gear with the Sony a6700 ready in hand.
To complement the rainy mood, I changed into a classic long-sleeved Sailor suit, where the deep navy collar and vibrant red bow created sharp visual contrast. My hair was styled into twintails, with the bangs and tips soaked by rain and clinging to my cheeks for a natural, tousled look. I had initially worn black glossy loafers, but for the visual narrative, I took them off entirely and stepped straight into the water wearing my White stockings. As the fabric absorbed the water, it took on a semi-sheer, clinging texture; the stream washed over my ankles, sending a creeping chill up my legs. To compose the shots, I sat atop a massive boulder in midstream or stood balancing on slick rocks holding the Transparent umbrella to explore different poses. The discarded black loafers rested casually on an adjacent stone, forging crisp contrasts: glossy black leather, White stockings, a deep navy pleated skirt, and running water formed a rich chromatic palette.
The shooting process was far from effortless. Moss-covered river rocks were extremely slippery, demanding immense caution while stepping in drenched White stockings. To channel that quiet, slightly melancholic mood, I held back smiles, letting my gaze drift distant or fix steadily on the lens. The photographer wielded the a6700 nearby to catch these fleeting moments; the soft, diffused ambient light on a rainy day worked wonders, illuminating skin and water evenly without harsh shadows. The a6700's subject-tracking autofocus proved spot-on while capturing subtle posture shifts—whether sitting with legs crossed on the stone, tucking my feet into the water, or even picking up droplets clinging to stray strands of hair.
The Transparent umbrella served as a pivotal prop. As rain drummed against the canopy, shooting through the surface turned droplets into an organic foreground, layering depth and texture into the frame. Ripples from the current merged with splashes from falling raindrops, infusing the entire background with motion.
The collaborative vibe at the Great Voyage photo walk was heartwarming, with everyone looking out for each other. Soaked in rainwater, the Sailor suit colors deepened, while the interplay between White stockings and moving water became the defining visual highlight. Though I was shivering by the end and my loafers were soaked through, reviewing these raw, rain-streaked frames without excessive retouching washed away the physical exhaustion. This session was not only a test of endurance, but also gave me greater mastery over uniform photography in wet conditions, locking in pure atmospheric photography in the rain.
