When shooting this set of Arknights Theresa Cosplay photos with the mourning theme, the hardest part was figuring out how to capture that quiet, sorrowful atmosphere. Upon seeing the proposal, I knew the focus was not on flashy outdoor locations, but on precise emotional expression and studio lighting/set design.
First came the preparation for costumes, makeup, and props. For Theresa lying in the coffin, to match the holy yet tragic undertone of her setting, the makeup was deliberately kept pale. The wig was a slightly wavy silver-white style, creating a striking color contrast with the vibrant lily flowers. The other coser participating in the mourning scene wore a black gothic dress with a sheer patterned mesh outer layer and exaggerated silhouette sleeves and skirt. This ensured that whether looking down from a high angle or kneeling beside the coffin, the garment had enough visual weight to anchor the frame. A translucent black veil revealed glimpses of her eyes, while the silver cross on her neck served not just as decoration, but as the finishing touch to the black ensemble, adding a sense of solemn religious reverence.
Building the set was the top priority for this shoot. Indoors, we set up a solid light-blue backdrop, placing several white Roman column models in the foreground. Combining the cold white stone texture with white flowers scattered at the base instantly created rich depth. The black coffin was actually a custom wooden crate lined with black padding. To recreate that deep, solemn feel, we filled it with a mix of real and artificial white lilies and white roses. During the shoot, holding the heavy golden five-arm candlestick loaded with long white candles created the main light source as the flames flickered. It introduced a striking temperature contrast—the cool blue background space interweaving with warm yellow candlelight gave the scene its most dramatic tension.
As for camera angles, we chose many high-angle shots from the side looking down, seamlessly connecting Theresa in the coffin with the posture of holding the candlestick while gazing down in grief. The heavy stacking of flowers really tested our set management; if a flower arrangement was even slightly off, it looked cluttered through the lens. We adjusted for nearly an hour before settling on a composition where the character's face served as the visual focal point, with flowers naturally scattering outward.
Regarding facial expressions and emotional delivery, this set required restrained grief rather than bright smiles. The eyes could not look empty; gaze had to fall precisely on Theresa lying in state, conveying mourning through slightly downturned lips and hands gripping the edge of the coffin. At times, to capture the most natural moment, holding up the heavy candlestick for minutes without trembling turned out to be quite a physical workout.
In post-processing, we avoided over-sharpening or heavily shifting colors, opting instead to preserve the camera's original color temperature while slightly darkening the edges to lock focus onto Theresa inside the coffin. The lingering candlelight reflected on the white flowers, forming an oil painting-like glow—exactly what I envisioned for this piece. Creating a photo set with rich storytelling and delicate detail is my finest tribute to the character Theresa and Arknights.
