[Marisa Kirisame cosplay] Touhou Project Mage Cosplay: Little Witch in the Woods

This shoot features Marisa Kirisame cosplay from Touhou Project, with the location chosen in a stone step area within a natural forest. I had long wanted to do a forest-style Marisa shoot, and this time I finally got all the props and costume ready. The hat is a custom black wide-brimmed pointed hat decorated with ruffled lace trim along the side, fitting snugly on the head so it doesn't slip off even in strong winds. The golden long curly wig was woven together using two wigs, providing abundant volume that drapes down over the shoulders and flutters naturally in the wind, giving a wonderfully lightweight feel.

In terms of costume, I specifically chose a black-and-white color-blocked Western dress. The upper body features black vest-style paneling, with white ruffles added to the neckline and cuffs. The apron portion uses a cotton-linen fabric with a subtle luster, presenting natural layering under sunlight. The skirt is a black puffy short skirt with three layers of white ruffled petticoats underneath; when sitting down, the hem spreads out like a flower, and when standing, it completely showcases leg lines. White socks and black leather shoes are Marisa's classic combination; I specially selected calf-length white cotton socks that both flatter leg shapes and add a lively charm while walking through the woods in this white socks and short skirt pairing.

The broom was the highlight of this photoshoot. The broom handle uses spirally wrapped ribbons in alternating brown, yellow, and black, offering a great grip. The broom head uses a substantial amount of orange-brown faux fur bound tightly, creating a fluffy visual effect when swung. Holding it while standing on the stone steps, my posture felt as if ready to take off at any moment.

The weather on the day of shooting was exceptionally nice, with sunlight filtering through tree canopy gaps to form dappled light and shadow on the stones. We picked a spot on stone steps with elevation differences, utilizing step heights for various poses. For the sitting pose, I sat on the stone steps with the broom placed horizontally across my lap, hands resting gently on it, body turned slightly toward the camera, and eyes looking off to the front side. This angle allowed light to hit my face, outlining a three-dimensional contour while the skirt hem spread naturally across the stone, looking serene.

For the standing pose, I stood between two rocks with one foot stepping one tier higher, one hand adjusting the brim of my hat, and the other holding the broom, resting my body's center of gravity on my back leg. This visually elongated lower body proportions. The combination of white socks and short skirt looked striking under the sun, and with the wind blowing my hair, the entire image gained dynamic energy. The photographer used a large aperture to blur background tree shadows, highlighting the subject while stone textures and raw roughness added authentic scene texture in this forest location photography session.

Although this outfit looks simple, wearing and adjusting it takes time—especially hair styling and hat securing, which required repeated adjustments between shots. Although the broom isn't heavy, swinging it requires controlling force to avoid hitting surrounding branches. Fortunately, light changed quickly in the forest; we seized gaps as the sun moved to capture several angles, readjusting positions and prop orientations with every pose change. Luckily, the final photos achieved the expected atmosphere of Mage cosplay.

I really enjoy outdoor shoots under natural light; the light combines softness and hardness, illuminating the face while leaving long shadows behind, filling the image with three-dimensionality and narrative feel. As a casual yet energetic mage in Touhou Project, Marisa's outfit inherently carries a blend of vintage and fairytale aesthetics, making it perfectly suited for this primitive stone-stepped woods. During filming, a few little birds even landed on nearby branches—though not captured on camera, that quiet yet vivid environment kept me fully immersed.

All in all, this was a very delightful shooting experience. Every step from outfit matching and prop making to scene selection received careful thought. I hope this share allows everyone to feel Marisa Kirisame cosplay charm and the unique fun of forest location photography.
