The Day 1 Convention photos from the 36th Guangzhou Firefly ACG Expo are finally ready! This time, I cosplayed Takanashi Rikka in her Dream combat suit. The design of this outfit is truly unique—the color-blocking of deep brown, black, and bright red offers rich depth, with the red elements standing out vividly.
Inside the convention hall, the crowd was overwhelmingly dense. To find a clean setting, photographer @八次方根 and I headed outside to the riverside promenade. The lush greenery and stone steps by the water served as an ideal backdrop. Shooting under natural light provided a much softer illumination than indoor flash rigs, while the gentle background blur of trees and green water kept the composition clean and enhanced color gradations.
This Dream combat suit is intricate in its details: a dark red underskirt paired with a brown overskirt, an eye-catching large red bow and gemstone on the waist corset, and a matching oversized bow headpiece. Combining the eyepatch with blue contact lenses brought out the character's distinct chuunibyou aura. Because of the off-the-shoulder cut and detached black arm sleeves, body lines are easily accentuated, requiring extra mindfulness of posture during the shoot. I opted for various seated poses and leaning against railings to utilize the visual elongation of Black stockings paired with shiny leather shoes, ensuring the legs looked long and graceful. The reflective leather shoes against the Black stockings added a tasteful vintage charm.
The giant red fork prop was quite large and caused arm fatigue when held aloft for long periods, requiring several breaks between shots. However, as Rikka's signature weapon, it served as the visual focal point of the entire set; its substantial weight delivered a solid tactile presence that gave the photos immense visual impact. The photographer was exceptional at capturing dynamic moments, rendering both the texture of the Black stockings and the rich colors of the red dress beautifully under natural light. We scouted multiple spots along the path—weathered stone steps, slightly rusted wire mesh fences, and park benches—whose slight industrial and everyday textures gave the character a compelling narrative feel.
As a Day 1 shoot at the 36th Guangzhou Firefly ACG Expo, successfully wrapping up this set despite the physical exertion was deeply rewarding. Many details of the costume, from the ruby at the collar to the tiered skirt layers, were captured faithfully, making this a truly satisfying cosplay shoot.
