The convention photos from ChuWuyu Anime Expo are finally finished! Preparing for this Haruhi Suzumiya cosplay took considerable time in advance. For the wardrobe, I chose her iconic Sailor suit in classic blue and white; the red ribbon bow at the collar and the sleeve stripes had to be carefully adjusted beforehand. The yellow headband was made from satin ribbon to ensure an elegant sheen under ambient light. Hair texture was vital for the wig—the tips had to curl softly inward, and the red ribbon clips on either side of the head required precise positioning to prevent looking top-heavy. On the bottom, the pleated skirt in vibrant blue was ironed to hold sharp pleats, with the silver square belt buckle secured tightly. Black stockings paired with brown loafers are standard uniform fare, though walking outdoors for hours certainly made my soles ache.
The shooting location was a waterfront promenade not far from the expo hall. It featured a row of stone railings, an expansive open water surface, and cross-water bridges flanked by lush green trees in the background, creating a pristine environment. The sky was overcast with thick cloud cover on that day, yet the light was surprisingly even, producing wonderful soft diffuse reflections without requiring artificial fill lights. Leaning against the stone balustrade, touching my hair, or resting one foot gently on the lower railing while shifting my center of gravity allowed me to highlight the pleats of the skirt and sleek leg contours. The brown leather schoolbag in hand was specially prepared, adorned with a small plush keychain to add a touch of authentic everyday life. In one shot where I held up a wooden sign inscribed with text, my facial expression called for a dash of haughty pride—directing a sharp, focused gaze rather than anything too soft.
We poured substantial thought into the posing design for this shoot. Instead of overly dramatic gestures, we relied on subtle, poised stances to express the character's core persona: resting one hand on the hip, glancing back in profile, gently clasping hands in front, or pointing forward with conviction. While waiting for gusts of wind to subside, I conferred with the photographer on composition, utilizing the leading lines of the balustrade to guide the viewer's eye. Even within an everyday school uniform, capturing that unapologetic confidence and bold swagger was paramount. Pausing between takes to groom flyaways and smooth fabric folds took several minutes each time, ensuring every frame looked crisp and intentional.
The post-processing philosophy centered on preserving natural lighting and the clean fidelity of the uniform. The contrast between blue and white needed to pop without veering into oversaturation, and skin tones were kept faithful to the raw captures without heavy skin smoothing. These Convention photos serve as a wonderful conclusion to this convention trip—capturing satisfying angles and spirited postures made the entire effort deeply meaningful.
