It has actually been nearly half a year since this set of photos was taken. When I was looking through last winter's hard drive folders yesterday, I found that the raw file progress inside was still stuck at the first stage of editing, making even myself daze at the screen. Probably because the realistic feeling of freezing and shivering during the winter shoot was too strong, my subconscious always wanted to wait until the weather got warmer to handle this set, and this delay directly crossed half a year. Today, taking advantage of the perfect weekend sunshine, I finally made up my mind to completely wrap up this old set of BanG Dream! photos, which serves as a milestone summary for myself.
Speaking of this Mashiro Kurata cosplay look, I was highly dedicated during the preparation stage. The wig is silver-white hair specially commissioned from a hand-craft artisan, feeling very lightweight to the touch. When wearing that small white beret, we spent a lot of time adjusting the styling angle to avoid squishing the bangs and hair roots. This white uniform is the soul of this look—double-breasted golden buttons, epaulets, metallic chains, and that black-and-gold cross badge embedded with a dark blue gemstone at the collar. These overlapping details make the overall styling possess the sleekness of a military uniform while fitting the character's clean and pure temperament. In addition, the leather gloves and the gradient blue-and-white ribbons on the skirt hem provide some color echoes for the overall frame.
As for the environment on the day of the shoot, we chose to do it indoors, specially setting up a scene with a European retro style. The white Roman column in the frame and the European carved wall paneling in the background created a highly ceremonial atmosphere. To break the overly solemn feel of the background, I curled up on a platform covered with white wrinkled fabric, arranging many white flowers and green leaves on my left and right, paired with a few yellow candlesticks and that dark wooden rocking chair. The photographer adjusted a very cool cold purple-blue toned lighting, making the scene look like a fantasy theater in a secret garden. Under such light, shadow, and setup, to find the most suitable expression and gaze, I tried different poses—like the half-squatting, side-turning posture in the picture, gently pressing the collar badge with my finger—striving to reify Mashiro's quiet, chilly, yet somewhat innocent and naive feeling. This beautiful arrangement maximized the dreamy atmosphere for this piece of Cosplay photography.
Looking back at these photos after half a year, some subtle changes have actually occurred in my editing mindset. The foundation from the early-stage shooting was excellent, so during this half-year, I was mainly struggling with color balance. On one hand, I wanted to preserve the cold-toned dreamy atmosphere in the scene, but on the other hand, I had to ensure the character's skin tone wouldn't look pale or exhibit strange color banding under the cold light. To restore the authentic texture of this costume, I spent a massive amount of time processing the texture of the uniform fabric, the reflections on the leather gloves, and the metallic luster on the edges of the chest badge, striving for a higher completion rate for the entire photo. Though the retouching process was agonizing, seeing the familiar character get closer and closer to the card art under my continuous adjustments brought an indescribable sense of achievement.
Besides editing, while browsing posts today, I also saw news about the 'Mashiro's Cinnamoroll' collaboration, which instantly made my heart skip a beat. For a cosplayer, seeing a favorite character launch a limited styling with such a cute contrast always makes it impossible not to map out the next shooting plan in one's head right away. If there is an opportunity in the future, I really want to try landing and shooting that style as well; it should present a completely different vibe compared to this white uniform.
This BanG Dream! anime-style photo set from half a year ago has gone through a long post-processing precipitation, but fortunately, I am quite satisfied with the final presentation. Finally, I hope that in every future cosplay session, I can maintain this love for characters and works, treating every shoot and every edit with dedication.
