This photo set was captured on July 18th at the IDO Anime Convention, portraying the character Barbie, with the Portrait photography handled entirely by myself. To capture that authentic doll-like quality, the core focus was highlighting the light-reflecting sequin fabric alongside polished hair and makeup: a pink sequined camisole paired with a tiered purple ruffled mini skirt, pink platform heels, blonde hair, blue contact lenses, and pink-and-purple pearl jewelry. The styling featured high color saturation with rich details standing out under the bright venue lighting.
The convention hall lighting had extreme contrast, as ceiling steel girders blocked parts of the overhead light while the floor cast strong bounce reflections. To keep facial lighting soft, I constantly adjusted my position, utilizing ambient spill from softboxes at nearby exhibitor booths to ensure the sequins sparkled without harsh shadows across my face. Self-shooting demanded extra care with composition and lighting; using a tripod and remote shutter release, I seized open moments in foot traffic to snap exposures quickly, then dashed back to check the preview and tweak angles.
For composition, varied angles were chosen to express the character's personality. The full-length standing three-quarter shot used a low crouching angle with slight wide-angle perspective; pairing it with pointed toes extended the leg lines while allowing the skirt to flare out naturally. The high-stool setup used the stool's clean lines as visual guides, with crossed legs accentuating the platform heels. For the half-body shot holding the oversized pink comb and purple butterfly, the prop angles and facial orientation were calibrated so the catchlights and nose contour remained crisp under side lighting.
To complement the textures of the pink sequins and purple skirt, makeup emphasized prominent false eyelashes and pale pink eyeshadow, while hairspray sculpted a sleek high-ponytail curve. Despite the heavy convention crowds requiring constant dodging of passersby and frequent adjustments to keep the skirt wrinkle-free, shooting directly within the authentic event atmosphere was deeply enjoyable. Background elements like the blurred C12 booth sign, passing visitors, gear bags, and light stands added genuine convention realism. It was a fulfilling creative log uniting makeup, self-timer techniques, and live ambient lighting, capturing the fun challenge of bringing Barbie to life.
