[Evernight Cosplay] Kiyomizu-dera Autumn Leaves and Red-Black Kimono

For the autumn leaves season at Kiyomizu-dera, I paired Evernight with a Kyoto Kimono look to take photos in Kyoto. It fits incredibly well with the character's own red and black color scheme. Combined with the backdrop of Kiyomizu-dera autumn leaves, it truly feels like stepping directly into a game scene. This shooting experience was highly interesting, so let me share the preparation behind this photo set and the stories of the shoot day with everyone.

When choosing the kimono, considering that Evernight's inherent features are pink hair and red eyes, I specifically looked for a kimono with a black base color, printed with a large area of white cranes and red uchiha (rigid fan) motifs. This color pairing of red and white patterns on a black background isn't common in many traditional kimonos, but it carries an unexpected visual tension when applied to an anime-style look. The primary black tone tames the vibrant hair color, while the red and white textures echo the elements of the original character. The obi (waist sash) section utilizes a solid black square material paired with a red-and-white braided cord knot; though a foundational kimono pairing, its waist-cinching effect is excellent, keeping the overall silhouette crisp and ensuring that the torso lines look remarkably clear when taking photos.

For the makeup, to restore that cold, crisp aura of the character, I chose a fairer base makeup paired with red lips and red colored contacts. The eye makeup was slightly heavier than daily wear, establishing a complete visual loop with the hair color and attire. Regarding headpieces, adding blue-black flower hair accessories and red dried flowers provided some extra layers to the short pink hair.

The morning of the shoot was actually overcast, and I was originally quite worried that the final photo results would suffer. However, a highly warm and bright sunlight miraculously broke through in the afternoon. The afternoon natural light shone obliquely through the autumn leaves forest, creating beautiful mottled tree shadows, and the texture hitting the clothes was exceptionally good.

This shoot captured several different scene framing options. In the courtyard densely filled with autumn leaves, we took half-body shots and close-ups, where the deep red backdrop paired with a red umbrella formed a highly unified tone. Having maple leaves as a blurred foreground in the frame adds an extra layer of dreamy envelopment. Aside from the courtyard, we also took full-body shots on the streets surrounding Kiyomizu-dera. The background on the streets is more casual, featuring streetlamps, roadside traffic signs, and blurred eaves; these mundane urban elements added a touch of real-life flavor to the frame. Holding this red-and-white oil-paper umbrella and pairing it with this geometric-patterned handbag carried along, snapshots taken while waiting for a vehicle or strolling around felt entirely natural rather than deliberately posed.

Walking on Kyoto streets wearing this kimono is honestly a physical chore. Especially with the zori (sandals) and tabi (socks) on my feet—though they match the outfit perfectly, my ankles felt noticeably sore after walking for a while. However, for the completeness of the visual effects, these minor discomforts are entirely acceptable. At the time, I also held a glass-bottled soda as a small prop during the shoot, which helped adjust my state during breaks while adding a touch of playfulness or casual spontaneity to the composition.

This shooting experience at Kiyomizu-dera was truly unforgettable. Autumn in Kyoto genuinely holds a unique charm; ancient streets, vibrant autumn leaves, and traditional garments fuse together beautifully, making it incredibly easy to yield stunning photos. The red and black color scheme displayed a very distinct texture under the reflection of the sunlight. When going back to the computer to check the raw shots, some frames even added a warm and soft atmosphere due to the backlight halo. Though it wasn't a grand or complex setup, relying on the real natural scenery and accurate costume matching allowed the final presentation to perfectly meet my original expectations for this cosplay photography shoot.
