[Jinhsi Cosplay] Studio Shooting Log & Casual Perspectives of this Black, White, and Gold Combat Outfit

When shooting in this fantasy-style anime-style outfit dominated by black, white, and gold, my biggest takeaway was the ingenuity of its design and the complexity of putting it on and taking it off. Although I joked in the post about the "vicious Wuthering Waves cosplay process," in reality, many details of this outfit blend traditional Chinese stand-up collars and frog buttons with the exaggerated tailoring proportions typical of anime. It takes a massive amount of time to organize the layers of each component. Image one was shot in a dedicated Japanese-style studio. The background was thoughtfully decorated with paper lanterns and pink cherry blossom bouquets, and the floor was woven tatami mats. The ambient light was intentionally set with a warm yellow side light, paired with a bit of cool-toned environment fill light, beautifully accentuating the luster of the white wig and the reflective textures of the black leather and gold metallic pieces on the costume.

To match this look, I chose light gray contact lenses and a pale pink lip color for the makeup. Since the overall tone leans toward a cool and elegant vibe, the focus of the eye makeup was on the blending of the lower eyeshadow and clean eyeliner. The wig is a waist-length silver-white straight wig, paired with a sky-blue bow headband. The hair fibers have excellent drape; when posing, a gentle breeze from a fan easily created the flowing, dynamic effect seen in image one. The long nail extensions on my hands were also part of the detailed coordination—the shimmering silver-white long nails are highly eye-catching during close-up phone selfies, beautifully framing the lines of my hand movements.

Speaking of the clothing structure, the black-and-gold shoulder pauldrons are secured to the body via buckles and straps. While they look crisp and well-structured, they place certain limitations on range of motion. Especially when doing kneeling or side-leaning poses, one must constantly ensure the fabric doesn't bunch into unnatural wrinkles. The inner piece is a black tube top combined with a golden breastplate, topped with a white patchwork robe, and featuring scale-like gold decorations around the waist and abdomen. The lower half design cleverly utilizes a high slit and a high waistline; when sitting down on the tatami, it beautifully showcases the proportions of the thighs and ankles, visually elongating the body silhouette.

Image two was casually taken in the lounge area using my phone's front camera after wrapping up the shoot. Although there was no soft lighting or specialized set design—with the night views of modern high-rises outside the window—the high contrast brought by the strong flash actually rendered the glossy material of the costume exceptionally clear, allowing even the embossed patterns on the edge of the pauldrons and the fabric seams to be visible. Compared to the meticulously staged image one, the raw, real-life perspective of image two offers a unique kind of fun.

The preparation time for this project was actually quite long, taking several hours from styling the hair to putting on the armor pieces. In between, I had to continuously adjust my movements to ensure that the fabric around my waist wouldn't reveal too much while lying down or sitting, and that the shoulder armor wouldn't pinch my neck. The long white trailing fabric in particular was prone to catching dust from the tatami mats, so I had to be extremely careful during the shoot. However, when the photographer captured the interwoven cool and warm lights in image one, looking at the preview on the screen made all the preparation feel entirely worth it. This is exactly what cosplay photography means to me—not just replicating a character, but also experiencing the fusion of garment structure and photography light and shadow. This set of photos captures a studio shooting log that records two completely different states, from meticulous lighting to casual everyday snaps.
