To truly bring Takanashi Rikka to life, a lot of effort went into the costume, makeup, and props this time around. Starting with her iconic 'Wicked Eye' eyepatch—while it might look like just a patch of cloth, keeping it firmly attached to the face all night required an underlayer of skin-tone tape topped with a decorative patch adorned with sequins and beads. This not only contoured cleanly to the face but also prevented telltale glare under harsh lighting. The palette of the patch was modeled strictly after the original design: vibrant red, blue, and green beads against a deep black base deliver a sharp visual punch. For the heterochromia, I wore an icy-blue contact lens in one eye; its high pigmentation stayed bright and translucent even under dim evening lighting. For the outfit, I went with a classic dark gothic-lolita ensemble. The black puff-sleeve velvet top absorbs light heavily, so during the night shoot, we added a subtle rim light from behind to trace the fabric's rich texture alongside the key light up front. The red corset cinches the waistline while providing a vibrant pop against the dark palette. To support the voluminous, layered skirt, I wore two different petticoats underneath—ensuring the outer purple frills and inner black lace layered with distinct depth. The deep-purple short wig was textured and shaped with setting spray so it kept that tousled yet intentional silhouette even in a light breeze.
Shooting on city streets at night presented unique challenges due to competing neon lights. To make the subject pop against the busy backdrop, we used a 50mm prime with a wide aperture, melting neon signs and passersby into colorful bokeh. This preserved the cyberpunk-esque urban night vibe while keeping the subject crisply defined. The umbrella served not only as a prop but also as an anchor for composition, its tilt aligning harmoniously with body angles. In terms of posing, Rikka's signature gestures carry that wonderfully endearing yet unapologetic 'chunibyo' confidence. Holding the parasol edged with black and purple lace, striking a piercing gaze, and reaching out toward the camera with the left hand evokes the feeling of sealing an arcane contract. Slightly angling the body while looking back over the shoulder showcased both the back details of the dress and the expression. We deliberately kept blurry pedestrian silhouettes in frame rather than waiting for empty streets; it created an evocative tension between the mundane real world and an imagined supernatural realm. The entire shoot went smoothly—with the cool night air and shimmering lights, the atmosphere matched the character's spirit perfectly.
