[Ellen Joe cosplay] Zenless Zone Zero Languid Vibes: Outdoor Steps Snapshots

I shot this set of my Ellen Joe cosplay on the steps, choosing an outdoor location together with photographer Linzai. Today, I didn't want to mess around with complex studio lighting setups; I just wanted to capture something more natural and full of life. The character Ellen Joe naturally possesses a strong languid and casual vibe, and placing her in a real outdoor setting brings out a richer flavor than an elaborately staged indoor set.

Let's start with the styling details. The wig was one of the most demanding parts of this shoot, as Ellen Joe's hair is a textured, layered short cut that needs to look casually tousled. The direction of the bangs and sideburns is crucial, and the bright pink/reddish highlights on both sides are the soul of the look, effectively brightening the heavier dark tones on the head while accentuating her edgy flair. For makeup, I opted for a cool-toned fair base paired with reddish-pink eye makeup. The red contact lenses serve as the finishing touch, instantly sharpening the gaze with her signature aloofness and alertness. The subtle reddish blush under the eyes simulates a slightly tired or world-weary look; paired with resting my chin in my hand, that "don't feel like working" or "think whatever you want" attitude comes through immediately.

The cosplay outfit follows a classic academic uniform style. The white shirt is made of a crisp, structured fabric so it maintains its shape, and a slim black choker fits snugly around the neck, adding layered depth to the upper body. Rolling the sleeves up naturally past the forearms reflects Ellen Joe's usual effortless, non-conforming style. The dark pleated skirt on the bottom has a moderate length, paired with sheer black pantyhose in a black tights outfit that balances the youthful vibe of a school uniform with a touch of mature, cool allure. For footwear, I chose dark brown patent-leather loafers with a glossy finish, creating a neat, sharp look. The overall black-and-white palette feels restrained, while the red-and-black highlighted hair, red eyes, and black tights pull the visual focus right back.

During the shoot, I incorporated iconic character props to enrich the frame. A pink flower charm hung on the black backpack beside me, serving as a subtle and delicate detail. On the steps behind me lay a black jacket patterned with white stars; placing props casually like this created an atmosphere as if the character had just stopped here for a breather, casually tossing her jacket behind her—perfectly capturing her relaxed personality.

For shot composition, we experimented with several different camera angles. The first is a close-up capturing facial nuances and that bemused expression with hand on chin; adding a post-production question-mark bubble brought a playful, interactive touch, making it great as an opening teaser for social posts. The second is a full-body wide-angle view, sitting on the wood-grain steps, leaning forward naturally with legs relaxed. This angle comprehensively displays the full cosplay outfit and body proportions, highlighting the leg lines and texture of the black tights outfit. The warm tones of the wood-grain steps and the beige wall in the background provided a gentle contrast, accentuating the cool, pale tone of the character.

The diffused outdoor natural light was wonderfully soft, avoiding the harsh glare on the wig often caused by flashes and eliminating rigid facial shadows. This allowed the skin tones and hair color to appear remarkably authentic and natural, without any overly heavy filters or post-processing artifacts. This photo set focuses on a relaxed, effortless vibe, so rather than posing dramatically, I relied on these relaxed postures to convey the character's unique personality.

Finally, a heartfelt thank you to photographer Linzai for his patient collaboration. We adjusted angles and compositions repeatedly under the bright sun all to recreate Ellen Joe's distinctive charm in Zenless Zone Zero. Cosplaying has always brought me immense joy, especially the process of concretizing a character from my imagination step by step and documenting it in a way that feels close to reality. This sense of authenticity is what makes cosplay truly captivating to me.
