The location chosen for this shoot was an indoor studio retaining authentic red brick textures and distressed wooden stairs, with ambient light spilling through lattice windows to create a soft, natural diffuse glow. To ensure the finished images captured a retro Chinese classical style blending aloof composure with gentle warmth, I put substantial thought into my wardrobe. Ultimately, I selected a white modernized Chinese dress (Qipao outfit); the neckline retains the traditional mandarin standing collar and frog closure frog buttons, while the shoulder and neck sections are spliced with translucent lace fabric, and the skirt features subtle translucent side slits trimmed with soft plush edging. For outerwear, I layered a lightweight white knit shawl adorned with long fringes, which created a fluid drape when moving and gesturing. A pale pink blossom hair accessory was pinned to my hair, breaking the monotony of an all-white palette in this Chinese-style photography shoot.
In terms of props, the circular silk fan was an indispensable accessory for this shoot. The bamboo-woven round fan face possessed tactile texture, and the fringe tassel at the bottom of the handle added dynamic vitality to the frame. The camera gear used was a Nikon Z52 paired with a Tamron 28-75mm F/2.8 G2 lens; this combination focused remarkably quickly in low-light indoor environments, while the f/2.8 aperture provided gorgeous background bokeh, isolating the subject cleanly from the brick walls and vintage stairs to highlight fabric textures and nuanced chiaroscuro on the face.
This was an original cosplay endeavor without reference to a specific anime or game character. Without the constraints of predetermined character lore, I had greater freedom to sculpt a serene persona imbued with oriental Chinese classical style elegance. For posing, I strove to remain natural and relaxed. Poses included sitting on a sofa while resting my cheek on one hand and gazing toward the lens, or holding up the fan to partially veil my face while looking back over my shoulder. In static seated poses, I paid attention to leg extension, naturally accentuating leg contours through the skirt's slit while keeping my upper body upright.
For makeup, to harmonize with the cool, aloof color palette, the base makeup was kept clean and translucent, while earth-toned eyeshadows were applied to contour facial structure, paired with a soft-matte muted crimson lip color. During shooting, the most challenging aspect was controlling the drape of the shawl. Because the fabric was so airy and light, the slightest motion shifted the direction of the folds, requiring repositioning at every new angle to ensure the fringes fell straight and naturally.
In the outdoor sequence, I utilized foreground foliage to craft spatial depth. Sunlight dappled across my face through leaves, which, combined with the off-white architectural backdrop, rendered the overall Atmosphere expansive and luminous. From setting lights and adjusting props to the final shutter clicks, the shoot proceeded at an unhurried pace, with the photographer offering valuable professional guidance on composition and lighting. This experience gave me a fresh perspective on styling modern Chinese classical style garments—no heavy embellishments needed; minimal color palettes juxtaposed against storytelling retro backdrops effortlessly collide into a textured Vintage portrait.
