The outdoor candid snapshots from the 24th WorldLine Convention are finally fully retouched today. This time, I brought three distinct character stylings, capturing them across lawns, by the waterfront, and around the venue's exterior perimeter.
First up was Rem's angel attire. This white dress paired with massive wing props behind her back proved genuinely difficult to control in outdoor gusts. To capture frames where the skirt fluttered naturally, we laid out a white rug across the grass, having her pace back and forth cradling a white pillow; out of several hundred shutter bursts, only a couple met our expectations. Anchoring the wings posed another hurdle: they had to be strapped to her back with clear shoulder harnesses concealed beneath the dress, and the halo overhead tilted with even the slightest movement. Harsh outdoor sunlight threatened to blow out the white fabric, so I dialed down exposure compensation throughout to preserve intricate lace textures and tiered pleats.
Next came Kinako's cardboard box concept. We sourced this cardboard box in advance from a courier station, retaping it neatly to ensure a clean appearance. The plush texture of the beast ears and tail looked fantastic, though wearing them easily ruffled the wig. I had the model sit inside the box, utilizing its cardboard rim as a foreground frame to isolate her upper body while the lake and lawn melted into soft background blur, tuned with a warm color grade to elevate cuteness.
Flandre Scarlet's ensemble was by far the most heavily crafted: the skirt hem featured lavish tiers of red lace and ribbons, accompanied by miniature wings on her back and a crimson weapon prop. We staged this under the canopied ceiling near the expo entrance, transforming overhead pinpoint lights into creamy background bokeh. Paired with her dynamic poses and the bold impact of the crimson-and-white contrast, the final images carried tremendous dramatic tension.
Finally, the look in photo eight—a crisp white blouse paired with an emerald green pleated skirt and Black stockings—was my personal on-camera everyday style. I selected it as the cover image because it turned heads across the convention floor. Tying the hem of the white blouse cinched the waistline, creating a sharp contrast between the green pleated skirt and sheer Black stockings, which sculpted the leg lines beautifully under natural light with just the right amount of skin translucency. Posing with a slight forward lean, one hand propped on my hip and the other resting beneath my chin, framed a slimmer face profile while drawing visual weight downward to elongate leg proportions. Shooting with a slight low angle blurred the lawn and distant architecture into a clean composition.
The biggest headaches during convention outdoor shoots are volatile lighting and surrounding crowds. I habitually measure ambient light with a light meter first, then position a reflector at the subject's side-backlight angle so facial contours gain sculptural depth without crushed blacks. For color grading, I preserved genuine skin texture without excessive airbrushing, purely finessing highlights and shadows to render a translucent, luminous look. Every character breathes a distinct aura—Rem's poise, Kinako's playful charm, and Flandre's gothic extravagance—all of which I strived to crystallize with each click of the shutter. The quality of these convention photos exceeded expectations, and I will be compiling behind-the-scenes outtakes soon.
