The concept for this shoot had been in the works for a long time, with the core intent to capture the serene stillness and poignant contrast of an afternoon at Abydos High School in Blue Archive. To cultivate this ambiance for our Classroom cosplay, we staged wooden desks and a blackboard as the classroom backdrop. The warm afternoon natural sunlight angled in gently, casting luminous warm patches across the desk surfaces. During the shoot, I experimented with multiple poses—resting my upper body across the desk, leaning sideways, and sitting on my heels—hoping to seize that rare, fleeting moment of relaxation for a character burdened by immense pressure. The textbooks on the desk and the surrounding classroom environment formed the most authentic everyday life atmosphere, creating a fascinating visual collision with the tactical gear worn over my uniform.
I poured significant effort into the fidelity of makeup, hair, and costume for this Takanashi Hoshino cosplay. The long pastel pink wig required constant grooming to maintain its airy, natural drape, while the geometric halo hair accessory atop my head demanded repeated angle adjustments to avoid any awkward angles across different camera perspectives. A crisp white long-sleeved shirt was paired with a bright blue tie, complemented below by a deep-navy plaid pleated skirt. To emphasize the tactical combat feel, I strapped on black tactical harnesses and waist pouches, with an ID badge printed with emblems and lettering suspended across my chest. The navy fingerless gloves on both hands not only added textural detail but also made gun-handling poses appear much sharper. Slung over my shoulder, the black-and-white sci-fi assault rifle carried substantial weight; whether resting it across my back or leveling it forward with both hands, engaging my core was essential to maintain steady, unwavering form.
In terms of photography gear, we utilized the Canon EOS R5 Mark II paired with an RF 24-105mm F2.8 L IS USM lens. Within the confined quarters of a classroom, this lens combination offered exceptional versatility. The 24mm wide end accommodated ample environmental context, crafting full-body compositions endowed with spatial depth; pushing to the 105mm telephoto end, the shallow depth of field from the bright aperture melted the background into soft bokeh, pulling sharp visual focus directly onto the face. Thanks to the camera's formidable eye-tracking autofocus, the focal point locked tenaciously onto the eyes even during candid, dynamic captures of downward glances or three-quarter profile turns—crucial for conveying the nuances of the character's expression in Anime-style photography. For example, in the frames where I rest my chin in hand gazing into the lens, that razor-sharp eye AF gave the gaze striking, piercing depth.
During the shoot, I paid special attention to bodily extension and lines. For instance, lying sprawled across the desk with legs kicked up playfully broke away from conventional standing poses while elegantly accentuating the White stockings. As sunlight brushed across the White stockings, it brought out a luminous, translucent texture that contrasted vividly against the dark pleated skirt. To achieve satisfying compositions, I constantly shifted positions between the wooden desks and the floor, searching for optimal angles where the light sculpted my silhouette with natural elegance.
Post-processing was primarily conducted in Capture One. The overarching color-grading rationale was to preserve the warm golden hues of the sunlight while reigning in highlights to prevent blowouts. I slightly lifted the shadows so that intricate details in the dark tactical gear remained discernible. Minor adjustments were applied to skin tones to cleanse color casts from ambient light, lending the complexion a dewy, translucent finish. To resonate with the evocative sentiment of hiding the past in an afternoon nap, leaving guardianship at her back, I deliberately deepened the warm golden halation in grading, enveloping the entire photo collection in a nostalgic yet resolute emotional aura.
Overall, while remaining faithful to the character's design, this set infused my own interpretation of the scene's emotional weight. From wearing and adjusting the costume and props to mastering lighting and composition, every single step underwent tangible experimentation and refinement. This serves as a complete, heartfelt record of our creative process.
