To bring Emilia to life at the ICOS anime expo, I put meticulous preparation into the wig, costume, and makeup. The purple-and-white gown features a fairly intricate design: a crisp mandarin standing collar, a teardrop emerald pendant resting at the chest, and voluminous draped flowing sleeves. The ruffles and deep-purple inner linings around the cuffs needed to hold their crisp structure, which took considerable effort during advance steaming and pressing. For the wig, I styled long, straight silvery-white hair with a braided crown, accented on both sides by delicate white blossoms and purple satin ribbons. To match the character's violet-blue irises, I wore matching-tone colored contacts and applied a purple-tinted smoky eyeshadow blend to evoke the original art's ambient lighting.
The convention schedule was extraordinarily tight. The ensemble comprised numerous separate components—particularly the over-the-knee white stockings and detachable sleeve covers, which required considerable time to adjust and secure. Walking and resting meant constantly monitoring the drape of the hemline and sleeves. The pose in photo four, crouching forward with both hands outstretched, was improvised on the spot under the direction of photographer Qingfeng Photographer V. Shooting against a dark backdrop with rim backlight demanded a slower shutter speed, so I kept my core engaged to prevent even the slightest wobble from causing motion blur. For photo two's standing reach, the challenge lay in maintaining the sleeve's sweeping arch—keeping arm tension firm while sustaining a serene, gentle facial expression. Photo three, seated relaxed on a plush faux-fur rug while cradling the jewel pendant, felt easier physically, though fine-tuning the subtle warmth in my eyes and lips took several shutter clicks to convey that tranquil yet enigmatic aura.
The on-site lighting setup favored low-key dramatics, using edge-side rim lighting to delineate the strands of silver hair and body silhouette, echoing the character's innate high-fantasy lore. In post-processing, Qingfeng Photographer V and I unified the overall color grade, keeping the vibrant white-and-purple palette sharp while adding a delicate softening to skin tones. The convention hall was packed with crowds, making standing in this full regalia for extended periods exhausting, so periodic breathers in the lounge area were a necessity. Exhausting as it was, seeing the dimensional light and shadow across the finished images made every minute of prep worthwhile. Bringing any character to the lens—from scrutinizing character sheets and sourcing fabrics to finally performing before the camera—is an endless exercise in balancing design fidelity with camera impact, and this Emilia shoot was truly an invaluable experience.
