Today, I took advantage of a break in the heavy rain to do this Haruhi Suzumiya shoot. Although it was a bit rushed, the Endless Summer hydrangeas in the rain combined with a transparent umbrella really matched the atmosphere of the original work. As a fan of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, this classic summer sailor school uniform was an absolute must. The red emblem on the collar not only recreates the anime details, but even the way the ribbon is tied follows the official artwork as closely as possible. The bright yellow headband on my head is truly the soul of the entire look, helping to break up the dullness of black hair. Paired with grayish-brown colored contacts and character-accurate eye makeup, the sharp, spirited gaze does a better job of recreating the Chief's slightly forceful yet cute aura.
The shoot coincided with a heavy downpour of the rainy season. The transparent umbrella was covered in dense water droplets, and the ribs reflected the surrounding light, creating a natural filter. To capture that rainy day melancholy and casual feel, we were basically in a state of "smashing the shutter whenever the rain eased up slightly," as the state of water droplets falling on the umbrella was fleeting. A friend helped set up the camera angle and captured many snapshots of me holding the umbrella and looking into the lens. In some close-up shots, you can even clearly see a droplet hanging from the tip of my nose. This unique moisture and raw authenticity of unedited photos from a rainy day is an effect that's hard to achieve under the harsh light of a sunny day; the lighting is incredibly soft.
Although we were forced to retreat by the heavy rain after only taking a few shots, this patch of Endless Summer had already become an excellent natural background. The large clusters of purple-blue hydrangeas beautifully complemented the blue-and-white sailor uniform, making the entire image color-rich without looking cluttered. During post-processing color grading, we intentionally preserved the gray-blue tones of the rainy day, which better reflects the character's unique youthful melancholy in gloomy weather.
In terms of hairstyle, to recreate the hand-drawn feel of a chibi character, I purposely cut uneven straight bangs and layered sideburns. When the hair strands got wet and stuck to the sides of my cheeks, it actually added a bit of vividness. For the makeup, I toned down the overall brightness to fit the theme of "melancholy" as much as possible. I have to admit that this outdoor photography in the rain was a huge test for both equipment and hair/makeup. The wig tangled easily, and the eye makeup required long-lasting waterproof treatment. But the moment the shutter clicked in the rain, seeing the rainwater sliding across the umbrella surface, droplets hitting the hydrangea petals, and then falling onto the uniform to splash tiny water droplets in the viewfinder—these natural details formed the most precious part of this shoot. Instead of deliberately striking too many poses, I just leisurely held the umbrella among the flowers, capturing a natural, slightly casual everyday feeling, recording the emotions endowed by the weather directly into the photos. It was a bit messy but incredibly fun; the sense of youth in the rain is truly special.
