[Mualani cosplay] Capturing Natlan's Unique Sunlight on the Grass

Under Natlan's bright sunshine, Mualani, who's ready to chase the ocean waves, headed out today.

In fact, the oceanic atmosphere of Natlan wasn't entirely brought into this real-world outdoor location. Instead, standing beside this slightly dry grassland and train tracks created a unique sense of contrast. Prop and styling preparation for these convention photos mainly focused on recreating the texture of the outfit. The light blue gradient at the wig's ends was handled quite well, which, paired with the blue flower ornaments on both sides of the head, successfully caught the character's recognizability. To get closer to the character's lively and wild nature, I specifically added white ringed line body paint onto my exposed skin. This kind of body art really tests one's patience; it requires not only smooth strokes but also considering sweat and makeup smudge during the shoot, so waterproof body paint pigments were used for reinforcement.

Natural light on the day of the shoot was very abundant, carrying a risk of overexposure. Luckily, the photographer mastered the timing of reflector fill light well, keeping the light-receiving surfaces of the white wig and top soft rather than blown out. Because the character's design is very young and athletic, when brainstorming poses beforehand, I abandoned the fixed posture of standing with a weapon. Instead, I chose a relaxed state as if ready to jump into the sea right after a short rest. Sitting on the ground shielding the light with one hand, eyes slightly closed, and silently reciting that voice line in my mind actually allowed me to immerse myself in the character's emotion very quickly.

I must mention the combination of shoes and leg guards in this outfit. To ensure overall tonal unity, the shoes were custom platform open-toe sandals, echoing the blue-and-white checkered fabric around the waist in color. The cutouts and pink triangle accents on the leg guards prevented the large area of blue from looking dull. However, moving around on the grass with these accessories and heavy shoes had its limits; to maintain the leg guards' shape, soft internal supports were added inside, requiring me to adjust my angle slightly when sitting down so creases wouldn't affect the shot. Removing masks and heavy armor, this relatively lightweight swimsuit-variant style actually demands higher body control and posture from the cosplayer, because with more exposed skin, any muscle tension or posture detail is clearly conveyed through the image.

The shooting process was actually quite interesting. To find the best angle for the reflector on the grass, the photographer practically laid flat on the railway tracks. Although the lighting looked somewhat cool and overcast in photos, the direct sunlight was actually sweating us through, and the reflective layer of the white body paint and top under the sun made the perceived temperature soar. Fortunately, sticking through it yielded great results. During the outdoor photography session, I deliberately tried various angles, including high-angle and low-angle shots, finally settling on this freeze-frame of shielding the sun with one hand on the grass. Mualani herself is a bright and radiant girl; her vitality shows not only in her confidence when facing formidable enemies, but also in her ability to find her own rhythm of relaxation in any seemingly ordinary corner.

When organizing the photos at the end, I really came to love this composition. The vertical texture of the grass and the horizontal railway tracks behind formed a cross-like structure; although the background was blurred, the sense of space remained intact. Positioning the character right in the center didn't look jarring, but instead gave a unique sense of leisure between heaven and earth. I've always believed that besides visually stunning art, Genshin Impact's character designs feature very vivid personality traits. Thus, when interpreting this character, I tried my best to appear radiant with energy—even while sitting on the ground, I emphasized keeping my core engaged and my back stretched so as not to slump over. These frozen-in-time photos really test a cosplayer's understanding of the character and body control.
