Recently, I tried using Doubao to do AI background replacement on my Violet cosplay raw photos, and the final seaside result was truly eye-opening. I've always wanted to take Violet Evergarden to a real beach and coastline for a photoshoot, but various real-world constraints kept getting in the way; using AI technology this time partially fulfilled that wish.
The raw photos chosen for this test were actually taken in suburban grasslands and park trails. To match the character's costume aura, I specifically sought out environments with natural vegetation and clear lighting, setting up lighting presets in advance. When generating the seascape with AI, I aligned the generated sun position with the directional light from the shoot, allowing highlights on the character and reflections on the sea to merge naturally. The generated image featured flocks of flying seagulls and a sparkling twilight ocean—the atmosphere felt remarkably seamless, giving me a fresh appreciation for post-processing tools.
Turning back to the Violet Evergarden cosplay outfit and makeup itself: the centerpiece is that dark blue cropped jacket, with white shoulder stripes and golden trim looking exceptionally textured under strong outdoor light. To give the pale gold wig rich dimensions under sunlight, I applied a matte spray to the ends and bangs, preventing greasy reflections and presenting soft, natural hair strands. The silver metallic prosthetic armor hand and suitcase deserve special mention—to enhance prop realism, the armor received multi-layered weathering, and the suitcase edges were detailed with wear marks. Carrying this suitcase while wearing the armor gloves along the entire park trail left my arms thoroughly sore, but seeing the calm, elegant poise reflected on camera made all that effort instantly worthwhile.
While creating with AI image tools, I've also been contemplating the balance between authentic photography and digital synthesis. AI bridges our spatial regrets and solves the pain point of "wanting to go to the sea but being unable to," yet natural outdoor lighting, wind direction, and the dynamic flutter of a flying skirt are physical nuances current AI tools can hardly replicate 100%. For instance, in the raw photos taken under natural light, dappled sunlight filtering through tree leaves onto the skirt and boots carried a lively, organic contrast.
So for now, AI background replacement serves as a wonderful temporary fix. Although this seaside set achieved my expectations in composition and color tone, a strong desire remains deep down: to one day wear this complete prop and wig setup while standing directly in real sea breezes for a genuine photoshoot. For me, Travel photography planning means far more than obtaining a polished image for social media sharing—it's about letting the Cosplay daily life character step out of her fictional realm into different environments and cities, experiencing real-world weather and warmth alongside me, a feeling no editing software can ever replace.
Lastly, a tip for AI background blending: choose raw portrait photos with distinct bokeh backgrounds. Sharper subject edges allow AI to key out the original backdrop and transition into the new environment far more cleanly. Additionally, keep the color tone of the new background consistent with the original photo—if the raw shot has warm lighting, select sunset or warm-highlight AI beaches, otherwise skin tones will look unnatural in the final image. Putting effort into color harmony paid off with a satisfying completion level, serving as a memorable milestone as I look forward to the day of an actual journey.
