Let's talk about the shooting details behind these Shao Siming cosplay Convention photos. This shoot was scheduled for the first day of the convention, where foot traffic was extremely heavy and lighting conditions were complex. Unlike studio shoots, Convention photos truly test your ability to manage the on-site environment—especially while managing a Stilt cosplay.
Putting on the stilts gives an immediate height advantage that instantly taps into the character's haughty, aloof presence, but mobility comes at a steep price. Walking on stilts wearing long stockings, my points of support relied entirely on calf and ankle strength, making standing for long periods exhausting. Without toe grip or flexibility, I could only pose in place; turning around required support from the photographer or an assistant, with the constant fear of falling over.
This Shao Siming costume features intricate details. For instance, the purple wig is very long, and the veil in front demands very gentle breathing; otherwise, noticeable chest movements show through the fabric, and it makes capturing the right gaze difficult. While the fabric appears lightweight, the skirt actually has multiple layers, which, combined with the waist cords and tassels, carries substantial weight. Furthermore, the white embroidered Patterned stockings on my thighs were extremely prone to snagging, so I moved with extreme caution to avoid catching them on chairs or railings in the venue.
Because it was an anime convention, the surroundings were naturally chaotic, filled with booth backgrounds, light stands, and passersby. To highlight the subject, the photographer used a wide aperture to blur the background, later adding visual effects of blue glowing butterflies and floor halos to give the frame a cleaner, more fantastical aesthetic. The convention venue had grey concrete flooring with heavy glare, taking multiple angle adjustments to avoid direct reflections.
Several amusing moments occurred during the shoot—kids stared at the stilts in fascination, and some visitors asked if the geta-like stilts were designed for balance. Many details were fine-tuned through repeated comparisons with the original design; concealing the face is also essential for capturing the character's mystery. Even though my vision was somewhat obscured, the resulting shots carried immense atmosphere.
Our camera angles were relatively fixed because my entire weight pressed onto the tips of my feet on the stilts, meaning I could only hold my ground and adjust hand movements per the photographer's cues. Holding a butterfly in one hand and a long-handled weapon in the other, paired with my leg posture, we tried numerous angles to achieve the desired elongated leg lines and silhouette. The texture of the Patterned stockings stood out vividly under the lights; this pairing showcased the leg lines beautifully, which is part of the character's distinct allure.
Regarding outfit accuracy, I focused on wig texture, waist sash details, and handling the long-handled prop. Because the prop is large and the stilts restricted mobility, holding it without blocking my face while accentuating hand and leg lines was quite a challenge. The purple-and-white color palette felt richly textured under dim lighting, and in post-processing we leaned toward cooler tones to align with the aloof, mysterious ambiance of the original design.
It truly was an exhausting shoot. To find good lighting, we moved across a few spots, each transition feeling like a slow, cautious shuffle. By the end, my ankles were sore and the veil obscured much of my view, but seeing the final images made it all worthwhile. Being at a live convention, managing interactions depended heavily on help from the crew, teaching me valuable lessons on shooting complex cosplays in crowded outdoor or convention settings. Every time I tackle a character with specialized gear, I gain deeper respect for the crew's hard work. Organizing the photos, looking at the blurred background and glowing butterfly lights instantly brings back the intense focus of balancing on stilts amidst the buzzing crowd. While this pairing of stilts and stockings was physically taxing, capturing the proportional fidelity and silhouette brought great joy, and I look forward to taking on more challenging and visually striking characters in the future.
